I heard that they were becoming popular again, but I hadnt seen one until this morning. Ran into a former employee of mine and still a neighbor, he was rocking life with a Hitler mustache. Cant say that Im a fan... the effect was made even more dramatic with his combination of the Hitlerstache with a goatee... oh the humanity

The "Hitlerstache" (great term, by the way) was quite popular at one time: Oliver Hardy and Charlie Chaplin both sported them, as well as many regular dudes of the time.
My understanding is that they were a populist reaction to the excesses of the Kaiser class of German overlords, who liked to wear full, bushy goatee style facial hair in all of their upper-class splendor (think Edwardian, post-Victorian era Europe). Their facial hair was as extravagant and egotistical as their loud clothes and overly-decorated homes and carriages.
But when the common folk, empowered by the likes of Marx, Lenin, and Trotsky, realized that this was all just an embarrassing display of excess wealth, they scaled things back to a simple, understated look: the humble tooth-brush over the lip. Just enough, without being ostentatious, and without trying to look like you were any better than anyone else.
Of course, it only takes one mass murderer to ruin a good thing.

In all my shock at what I was seeing, I forgot to check if he was still going with a mullet. Regrets that I didnt, it could have been a male grooming trifecta.
OTOH- When women groom to this style "down there" its called a Clitler.
