Jake is the only person I can think of who might also be interested in this information, but perhaps someone else here who wasn't taken in the rapture will be. "John Carter of Mars" is to be released in 2012. Willem Dafoe plays Tars Tarkas.
Although, I could be wrong about Jake being interested as well. Just because he enjoys the Gor books doesn't mean he enjoys the Barsoom books.
Zilla (who thinks it's a damn shame they won't make a movie that looks like a Frazetta cover)

I'm very interested. The world needs some ERB movies a lot more than it needs more Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Thanks for the heads up! Off to IMDb.......
edited: is this film animated? Or live action? It's not clear from the IMDb listing, but the director is a Pixar dude......
edited again: according to Wikipedia, it is Andrew Stanton's first live-action film.....

It's getting close! March 9, I think. Looks like it could be good.....
By the by; either they are planning to make Led Zeppelin's Kashmir the theme song, or they haven't finished the official soundtrack yet!

Four minute sneak preview of an arena fight. I like it......

Yep, I'll probably go see it based on this, even though it's made by Disney.
Zilla (who is tempted to reread the books, but that would truly ruin my movie going experience)

Hey Zilla - I notice that they dropped the "Of Mars" from the title. What do you suppose that means? Are they going to try to imply that Barsoom is some far-distant planet, now that we know exactly what doesn't exist on the real Mars?

I'm heading out to see this today. I'll let you know my opinion when I get back.

Well, apparently Zilla never made it back to give us her review. Maybe she is stuck on Barsoom! Anyway, I finally saw this flick tonight on Netflix. All I can say is, AWESOME! I looooooved this movie. It was the perfect balance of action, camp, humor, seriousness, silliness, special effects, honest emotion, misdirection, and plot. The visuals were stunning, the imagery was imaginative (especially the ethereal airships, and the four-armed Tharks). The story had enough layers of Earth vs. Barsoom and past vs. present to keep you guessing. I hope they make two sequels. Any more than that and it would probably get tedious (like Pirates of the Caribbean), but two more would be juuuuuuust perfect.

Seeing as how Disney took a bath with this movie, I can't imagine a sequel, although there seem to be a loyal group of ardent fans of the movie clamoring for at least one more ...

Forgot to mention: Kashmir didn't make it into the final cut, not that I expected it to. Would have been a nice addition, though. And they did set it on Mars, so I don't understand why they dropped it from the title.

Update: lots of theories about why "of Mars" was dropped from the title. But the most compelling (to me) is the recent spate of movies that FLOPPED that had Mars in the title. Those filmmakers are a superstitious lot!
