We saw Connick in concert last night in Austin. He has been here for a while filming a movie (When Angels Sing with Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Lyle Lovett).
I had always liked Connick but had considered him a good voice for singing other singers' styles (Sinatra, etc.) and the concert changed my opinion.
He was hitting on all eight last night. The guy really does have his own style. He is at his best doing improvised jazz, IMO. He had a large orchestra backing him up and had several good instrumental and vocal soloists with him from New Orleans. One of them (whose name I couldn't understand) sounded very much like Louis Armstrong. Connick also has a sharp sense of humor and a good rapport with the audience. He spoke to a group of soldiers in the audience, thanking them for their service and telling of his sister, an army psychiatrist who had just returned from Afghanistan the prior day.
Connick is a talented vocalist, pianist, and trumpet player. See him if you get the chance.
When he speaks, he has a very strong south Louisiana accent, which almost disappears when he sings.
He got several standing ovations starting with his remarks to the soldiers.
I did not realize that his dad (who is well known in these parts as the Orleans Parish DA who replaced Jim Garrison after the Garrison's JFK assassination investigation hit some raw nerves) also sings a few times a week in New Orleans.

I have always enjoyed H.C. and there's no doubt he's very talented , but how were the wings and breasts at hooters?

Better than the other way around. You really don't want greasy breasts.

The 2nd time I saw Harry Connick Jr. in concert his dad was in the audience. With a little encouragement he came up on stage and they sang a duet. He can definitely sing.
I have had the opportunity to visit socially with Harry Connick Sr. on a couple of occasions. The last time was actually at my father's funeral. His is a quiet and soft spoken man. One of those true southern gentlemen. And yet he commands a room. I think his son is a carbon copy.
Harry Connick Jr. grew up in New Orleans at the same time and studied with Wynton & Brandon Marsalis. How would you like to be in those classes?

NOLA, I was hoping that you would chime in on this. New Orleans was well represented at the concert.
