My sweet wife prevailed upon me to take her to Dallas to see Ricky Martin last night. I have seen probably 100 well known musicians/vocalists live from Benny Goodman to Justin Timberlake. For every other prominent musician I have seen, even if the musical genre was not my cup of tea, there was a point in the performance where the unique talent was apparent. Ricky Martin had no such talent. You could hear two or three better voices on a good night at karaoke. He isn't very bright. He has generally lousy stage presence. He has a few trademark dance moves that he repeats over and over to the point of absurdity. His clothes were artfully tailored and the lighting skillfully manipulated in order to hide the 15 or 20 pounds he has packed on. I will give him that he has a loyal latin fan base. The audience was probably 80% Mexican but there were still probably 30% of the seats unsold in what was a fairly small venue for the Dallas-Fort Worth area. (Nokia Theatre)
His band and the supporting entertainers were good, but he needed them. As soon as another halfway talented latin act comes along, he will be playing at the Holiday Inn.
I will admit that after the recent news stories were released quoting him as saying that he was angry and bitter with his life, I thought he should have the shit slapped out him for good measure.
That Ricky Martin sounds halfway decent on his CDs is a tribute to the talents of mixers and sound engineers.

His uncle Dean would be disappointed. I saw Dean in Las Vegas and he was outstanding. (He is still popular in Texas for his one country chart hit Houston.

It's important to see the previous generations hit makers if you can. I would have liked to have seen Dean Martin. I saw Don Rickels 10 years ago and he was great, 90 minutes of non stop laughter. I wanted to see John Lee Hooker in Vegas but he died just a few months before his scheduled concert dates.

Denice and I seen Engelbert Humperdinck about 31 year ago at Harrah's in South Lake Tahoe. I thought at the time "this will suck". Well, what a show. 90 minutes non stop entertainment.
The best live show we have ever seen by was by Huey Lewis about 10 to 12 years ago at Caesars in South Lake Tahoe. Another nonstop out of this world performance.

I will admit that after the recent news stories were released quoting him as saying that he was angry and bitter with his life ... Probably still upset about not getting that starring role in "Brokeback Mountain".

A friend surprised me for my b-day one year with tickets to a Cher concert. (I have always liked the timbre of her voice and enjoy her singing.) That concert was one of the best I have ever seen. The lighting and costumes were spectacular!!! I saw Twisted Sister twice last year and the were GREAT!! They were really funny and irreverant. Imagine that....

I saw him (Ricky Martin) in concert at the Nassau Coliseum during the height of his popularity. My cousin was visiting from Panama and she was dying to see him. My ex-hubby works for a concert promoter and I was able to get a pair of tix from him. He had the audience (mostly young girls, of course) out of their seats and dancing in the aisles. I can't really remember hearing much of the music, just lots of SCREAMING! But at least the house was rocking with lots of energy and it was sort of fun. But if he came back this way again I wouldn't be interested in seeing him again.
Edited to qualify that the "him" I was referring to in my opening sentence was Ricky, not Tom Jones.

I saw Tom Jones several times and Englebert once. Both were excellent. Wayne Newton is also very talented. We saw Cher and the Village People in Shreveport. Good show. She is working the farewell deal pretty hard.
We get some very good musicians(but not the pop superstars) here locally through a community concert association. The auditorium is a five minute walk and the tickets are cheap. Recently, we saw Dave Brubeck. He is an acquired taste but I always liked him and wanted to hear him play Take Five.

He and his family live about a mile from us here in CT. I have know him and his family since I was about 16. His wife is a doll! His kids are real nice they went to school with Rupe. His son Chris is married to another friend and we have drinks to gether every so often.

Brubeck left for Dallas fairly quickly after the performance but the protocol here is very informal (no security, etc.) and I chatted with his bass player (he went by Jack Six) and some other members of his band. They were affable and they had made a small bet on what the elevation of our town was which I settled for them. The performance was excellent and the band members were really decent guys.
Another musician that I met here and liked was Doc Severinsen (when he was band leader for Johnny Carson). His daughter Nancy was living here at the time at he came down to see her several times and put on a couple of performances. He had an old trumpet player buddy who lived here and they played a hell of a duet (It seems like it was Rondo for Trumpet.
