Huskies knock off No. 1 Ark Tech, advance to national semifinals
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Michigan Tech will equal its deepest NCAA Tournament run in school history after the No. 3-ranked women's basketball team knocked off the top-ranked Golden Suns of Arkansas Tech 69-58 Tuesday in the third of four national quarterfinals.
The Huskies (30-2) took control of the game with a 12-2 run midway through the second half after trailing by a point at halftime and held off a late Ark Tech run to within five in the last three minutes.
Tech, which set a school record with its 17th consecutive win, last reached the final four of Division II women's hoops in 1993.
The Huskies held the Golden Suns (30-3) 26 points under their season average and limited leading scorers Jenny Vining and Natalia Santos to 14 and eight points, respectively.
Guard play lifted the Huskies all night, as Sam Hoyt and Angela Guisfredi combined for nine 3-pointers. Hoyt was 4-for-7 from behind the arc for a team-high 18 points, while Guisfredi's 15 points came on 5-of-8 3-point shooting.
Lisa Staehlin added 15 points, all in the second half after sitting most of the first in foul trouble. Lucy Dernovsek had just four points, but added a game-high 16 rebounds.
Jessica Weatherford of Ark Tech led all scorers with 21 points.
Tech awaits the winner of the fourth and final quarterfinal between Northwest Missouri State and Cal Poly Pomona. The Huskies will play in the second of two national semifinals starting at 9 p.m. ET.
