Fell on the ice curling yesterday, left knee took the brunt of the landing (landed on the outside of the left leg, which folded from the knee in towards my right leg). I can walk easily enough, just dont ask me to do stairs, and I cant put my pants or socks on myself, and getting on/off the toilet is problematic... I am either real old or a real jock, or most likely, a real old jock.
Doctor took xrays, nothing broken. We are holding off on the MRI for now. If things dont improve by the end of the week we'll do that. He is pretty sure that its the meniscus, if so, its either a 2-3 month recovery or surgery. Alternative, much less likely, a bruised bone.

Ouch!
On the plus side, it's a great excuse to walk around the house pantless.

I know how you feel Gordon. Things don't heel as fast as they used to. Get well soon.
ps. You might want to take up a less active sport like TV watching or something like that. ;D ;D ;D
edited to add: Sounds like you are on at least the 60 day DL ;D ;D

Gary, the worst part of this this all is that we are having our club championships this week. We had last week off because of scheduling... my team wanted to practice because of the week off, to keep sharp... the injury happened during the practice. DUH!

BTW, how is your knee?

Post by Ardbeg... innit on Mar 22, 2011 7:38:41 GMT -6
Thanks for asking Tex. Slowly getting better. My range of motion has improved to the point I can do stairs, one at a time. I can put my pants on very carefully, but still cannot put the left sock on (shoe only if I slip it on, I cant tie it while its on my foot).
I cant walk around a lot or the knee swells up on the underside. So its rest, ice, elevation as much as possible.
I had an MRI done last Friday, still waiting to hear what the scans showed. If the doctors office doesnt call by mid-afternoon, Im calling them. Not too worried if surgery is required. There was a guy in my curling club who had exactly the same problem who was up and playing again after only one week's recovery.
Edited: All in all, if I was a horse Id be looking at the business end of a rifle, unless I was Secretariat

I quit lifting heavy weights a couple of years back and switched to Pilates. All of my friends who lifted much weight were falling apart and I figured that I wasn't Superman either. Turning your knee is hard to avoid if you are active at all.

Me too. I quit hoisting 12-ounce beers and switched to 6-ounce martinis. Much easier on the rotator cuff.

Good point Jake, but watch out for the carpal tunnel with all of that repetitive motion, regardless of the weight involved

Hope things heal up for you real soon Gordon.
I'll still do the 12 ounce beers and tall Jack and 7's.
I don't lift many heavy things at the ranch any more. About the heaviest is a 50 lb sulfur bag or fertilizer bag.

Well, the doctors office just called, its definitely a torn meniscus, I see him tomorrow to "discuss our options", presumably that means "when we schedule the surgery for".

I plan to do it ASAP. Another guy in our curling club tore his meniscus last summer playing golf. It healed enough that he decided to live with it. By January he reinjured it for the 3rd time and went in for the surgery. Within two days he was back up on his feet and curling again the next week (in curling we have the equipment that lets you push the stone with a stick, he had been using it, its generally reserved for people who cannot bend down, i.e. its an "old persons" thing, I used it this past weekend for our club championship and HATED it).
He told me flat out, DO NOT WAIT, have the surgery. Even though his knee is fine now, his brain rewired his walking gait to include a limp, so he still limps even though he has no medical need to. Its going away now, slowly, as his brain rewires again.

Had the consult with the doctor this afternoon... not only a meniscus tear but a slightly torn PCL. The latter is usually not operated on unless you are a high value YOUNG athlete.
I'm in pre-op physical therapy to get my range of motion back, and I go under the arthroscopic blade on April 18.
