... they just smell that way.
I don't often get to see live bands these days, and some of you are familiar with how things ended up the last time I *tried* to go to a concert with my ex last September, so when my old friend Steve of 80's punk band Special Duties told me they were reforming, having gone their separate ways yet again, and supposedly for the final time, in 2005, I jumped at the chance to go along and see them one last time yesterday evening. Special Duties had been asked by upcoming local band, Koopa, to support them at a gig being held to raise money for the family of a young girl from the town who recently died after a long illness. Back in January Koopa were the first ever unsigned act to enter the UK singles chart and are tipped for big things with their catchy punk-pop sound (which might appeal to the Mika loving Zilla).
The gig was held at a venue called 'The Arts Centre' which is actually an ancient church here in town. It is said that is was from this particular church's walls that the cannon nicknamed Humpy Dumpty fell during the English Civil War... hence the nursery rhyme "Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall..."
As punks young and old looked on Special Duties took to the small stage first, once bassist Bart had finally arrived back from the pub... he says he plays better when he's drunk... and using borrowed gear were surprisingly tight after their two year break and blasted out a powerful set that included most of their singles from their heyday in the 80's. Then followed Koopa who sounded very much like a British Blink 182 with a catchy sound and lots of cheeky chatter with the audience. Apparently they have just come back from a trip to the US where they have been promoting themselves on various radio shows across the country... so look out for them, they could be big soon!!
