I am so glad that I lived long enough to experience this, not to mention that I still have a daughter to marry off...
Bridal Diapers: A New Trend?
Someone just emailed me about a post on Marie Claire's Fashionista blog on a possible new trend in weddings: bridal diapers. They wanted to know if I thought this was a real trend.
I'm happy to say that I've never heard of this before, and no, I don't think this is a trend.
I asked the wedding dress experts at Kleinfeld Bridal what they thought of bridal diapers. Here's what Jennette Kruszka, director of marketing/PR, said on the subject:
"Kleinfeld has not witnessed a trend in bridal diapers, but if your bridesmaids can't assist you in the stall and you must wear a diaper, please wear it to your fittings so you can ensure the gown fits properly!"
The Fashionista blogger read on a wedding message board (I found threads on bridal diapers on several) that a bridal salon suggested a bride whose wedding dress takes 20 minutes to get in and out of may want to wear a bridal diaper to help her, I'm assuming to avoid an accident if she can't get the dress off or so she doesn't have to miss a moment of her wedding reception.
While I wasn't able to find a site online that sells bridal diapers - you can see a photo of a bride in a bridal diaper at Frisky.com - I did come across a number of message boards that mentioned using adult diapers, like Depends, under your wedding dress. Oh, and these brides add some bridal-white trims to make the diaper feel more bridal-y. At least no one suggested the bride insert a catheter and tape a bag to her leg.
As someone who had a bathroom emergency at her own wedding, and as a bridesmaid who aided a bride during her bathroom emergency, I can tell you that there are other options.
Here are my bathroom-emergency tips for brides:
1 – If you feel the urge to pee, then make a beeline for the bathroom and grab a friend who can help you get in and out of your dress.
1b – If your wedding dress is complicated to get in and out of, bring said friend to your fittings to learn how to get the dress on and off.
2 – Bring a friend or two with you to the bathroom to hold up your skirt so you can pee.
3 – Don't drink too much of anything to avoid the need to pee.
4 – Make sure to use the bathroom before you get into your wedding dress.
