Demise of the Big 12 Conference?

WTF!?!? This is the first I have heard/seen on this, Nebraska is going to the Big 10 and the Texas universities going to the Pac 10 with the Big 12 going deep 6? What rock have I been sleeping under?

The Big 12 appears to be dead.

A source close to the Nebraska Board of Regents told Orangebloods.com the regents informally agreed Wednesday to move to the Big Ten and that a formal announcement Nebraska is leaving will come Friday.

Sources close to Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech have suggested to Orangebloods.com over the last week that if Nebraska leaves, the Big 12 can't be saved.

Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds and president Williams Powers gathered UT coaches today at 2 p.m. CT to tell them they did everything they could to save the Big 12 but that they were unsuccessful.

Just as Orangebloods.com was first to report last Thursday, the Pac-10 will invite Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Colorado.

And it appears those invitations will be accepted.

According to sources, Colorado will also opt out of the Big 12 and accept an invitation to the Pac-10.

A legislative source with knowledge of Texas A&M said officials from A&M and Texas will meet on Thursday to discuss all the goings on and to make sure they are on the same page if the Big 12 falls apart.

According to sources, A&M and Oklahoma both have had conversations with the SEC. A&M's conversations with the SEC may have been to appease A&M regent Gene Stallings, who won a national title as coach at Alabama and would love to see the Aggies in the SEC.

But Orangebloods.com has learned Gov. Rick Perry, a diehard Aggie, will work to make sure Texas and Texas A&M stay together.

Other sources have said that Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will do whatever Texas and A&M are doing.

A source said Texas and Texas A&M remained steadfast in lobbying for the Big 12 to stay together until Nebraska's decision to leave became evident.

Sources said the six Big 12 schools would begin participating in the expanded Pac-10 beginning in 2012. That should make for an incredibly uncomfortable next two football and basketball seasons with the schools who could be left behind.

What remains to be seen is if there will be any schools left to collect the buyout penalties of $10 million for bolting the conference. You need a super majority of nine votes to dissolve the Big 12.

But with the Mountain West putting off its vote on Boise State on Monday, it's obvious there will be bidders for what's left of the Big 12.

Missouri, which sent its Big 12 brethren scrambling a year ago when its governor said he thought the Big Ten would be a good fit for the Tigers, still appears to be waiting for an invitation from the Big Ten, according to multiple sources.

An athletic director with knowledge of the Big Ten said, "Missouri is getting cold shoulder from Big Ten."

Joe Schad of ESPN reported Wednesday that the Big Ten list of interest for expansion goes like this: 1) Notre Dame 2) Nebraska 3) Rutgers and/or Maryland.

The deadline for the Big 12 to pledge allegiance to each other is Monday. With the conference seemingly coming apart, the question is if there will be a super majority of nine votes needed to dissolve the conference.

Was listening today to the sports talk radio show on KNBR from San Francisco that all of the conferences are going broke. The schools are trying to get more money from TV to try to survive. There is talk of Stanford leaving the Pac 10. I guess the economy has gotten to them.

... and the rumor mills are red lining... Texas and A&M are now reported to be knocking at the Big 10 door along with Nebraska (WOW, I would love to see them play back to back games in Madison and Ann Arbor in November) and Oklahoma to the SEC.

Grab a bag of Cheetos sit back and watch the fireworks, this could be the best action movie of the summer.

Joe, no question that will swing the "center of gravity" in the Pac10 eastward and become a juggernaut for the traditional schools of that conference to contend against, both on the field and in the board rooms.

I could see the $$$ sense of the B10 bringing in one or 2 Texas schools because of the brand marketing (that in its essence is what this is all about) The Big Ten TV Network will be driving the expansion of that conference for the next decade. Nebraska brings a tradition on the field and fan base, but not a lot in new viewers for the network. Add 1 or 2 Texas schools and the TV base expands dramatically (which is why the B10 is looking for an east coast school also, something that will interest the TV sets from Boston to DC)

Of course that is what make Notre Dame the golden tuna in all this. Nationwide following makes it a revenue generator regardless how mediocre the team is on the field. But as one commentator out it "ND is too busy scheduling opponents for 2031"

As for my alma mater, the is a LOT of talk in Madison that Wisconsin-Nebraska could become a premier rivalry (W head coach Barry Alverez is a Nebraska graduate), and a LOT of red in the stands for that one.

Nebraska is now in the B10

Nebraska joins Big Ten

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska’s membership in the Big Ten Conference is official.

The Big Ten’s board of presidents and chancellors unanimously approved adding Nebraska today, just a few hours after the school formally disclosed its interest.

The move is a potentially crippling blow to the Big 12 and the biggest move yet in an off-season overhaul that will leave college sports looking much different by this time next year.

Chancellor Harvey Perlman says the move offers stability “that the Big 12 simply cannot offer.” The move becomes official July 1, 2011.

Perlman disclosed the plan during a meeting of the university’s Board of Regents, proposing that play in the new conference begin after one more year in the Big 12. He said he believed Nebraska is much more “aligned” with the Big Ten than the Big 12 when it comes to academics, culture and athletics.

The regents unanimously approved a resolution supporting a move to the Big Ten.

The Big Ten Network will have live coverage of Perlman and Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne’s news conference at 6 p.m. today. It will also be streamed live at bigtennetwork.com.

Adding Nebraska is the Big Ten’s first expansion since 1990, when Penn State joined. Big 12 officials in Dallas did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

Nebraska’s move comes at the end of a crazy week in college athletics.

On Thursday, fellow Big 12 member Colorado announced it was leaving for the Pac-10. Texas and other schools in the Big 12 South — Perlman told the regents that the Pac-10 had been in touch with many schools in that division — could be the next to leave. Texas regents scheduled a meeting for Tuesday to discuss the Longhorns’ future in the Big 12.

“One school leaving a conference does not destroy a conference,” Perlman said. “Nebraska did not start this discussion. After the Big Ten announced it planned to consider expansion, we saw reports that Missouri would want to go to the Big Ten, including a statement by their governor, a member of board of curators and chancellor — comments that weren’t clearly supportive of the Big 12.”
