A couple years back I would have cringed at the remake of a classic sci fi TV show. No longer! After the fantastic "reimagining" of Battlestar Galactica, I cant wait for this show to start. Four episodes starting on ABC on Nov 3, then a hiatus until next March (in the UK, on the Sci Fi Network, but not until March)
The original series (1984), saw a huge alien vessel settle over major cities worldwide with the stated intent of trading technology for critical resources for their ailing homeworld. Many settle into neighborhoods and are initially accepted by humans... but then...
It appears that the new series will at least start with this basic premise

Somehow I never managed to see the original series. But this one looks like good solid entertainment.
I wonder if it can be construed as a political analogy? Let the theories begin!

I think that just about any work of fiction can be construed as political if you want it to. Gene Roddenberry quite openly proclaimed that the original Star Trek series was not about the future, but was about the present.

How did I miss this thread till today?
I absolutely loved that show when it was broadcast in the UK, and thought that Diana (Jane Badler) was the hottest woman on TV at the time. Ok, so she was really a reptile wearing a human skin but hey, nobody is perfect.
The trailer looks good so I hope the show lives up to expectations. Looks like I'll be doing some downloading over the next few weeks if it's not going to shown here till next March.

Morena Baccarin (as Anna, leader of the aliens) looks pretty damn hot... I wonder if she has "the jaw". It was pretty erotic in the original series, until she used her mouth on a rat that is.

I also thought Dr Julie Parrish (Faye Grant) was pretty damn cute... with the added advantage that she didn't eat rats.

The SciFi (excuse me its SyFy now) Channel is currently running the first season of the original V series. They played the entire miniseries that started things today, and appear to be playing a couple episodes a night this week.

Watching the original series again. (Allowing for 25 years of special effects advances) The miniseries and its sequel were pretty good. A "Nazi" type takeover of the Earth rather than the scorched earth policy we saw in the movie Independance Day. Rebellion, rejection, and defeat of the invaders through germ warfare. The acting was fair, and for the most part performed by actors who disappeared from the big or small screen. Writing and special effects are what you would expect for an early 80's miniseries.
The episodes I have watched from the regular season series are borderline "suck". The budgets were scaled back quite a bit, and it shows. Entire chase sequences between the humans and aliens were lifted directly from the miniseries (presumably to save $) the writing and directing was several steps below the initial effort, and the acting suffered from replacement characters filled by even less talented acting.
The aliens return to Earth after spending a year regrouping, hiding behind the moon to avoid detection. The effects of biologic weapon used to drive the aliens off the first time are degrading and further use will result in toxicity to humans (a fact not known to the aliens). The aliens return and the humans grant them a chunk of LA to settle into, so we can all live together peacefully. The aliens pimp out their rides, form street gangs, get jobs illegally... oops wrong aliens.
You get the picture.
Jake- the video link didnt show a heck of a lot, except that there are a lot of actors Im not familiar with. Looks like a comparable start, it will be interesting to see how closely they follow the original.

A less than impressive premier last night. Slow, ponderous, and frankly, boring. I found the "theyve been among us for decades" angle a bit of a stretch, given how easily their reptilian underskins were exposed by a simply cut (seems to me they would have been discovered long before).
The overall storyline, so far, mimics the original, which is even more disconcerting. Having just rewatched the original miniseries, I think they might have done better with it the first time around.. so far.
I plan to watch again at this point, but they will have to pick up the pace to keep me interested.

**Contains Spoilers**Just watched it : *Cheesy *Poor screen writing *Naive directing That cover it? However, I did kind of enjoy it, but I expected so much more... "Hello gullible humans, we are here to help you and all we want in return are some of your home grown resources. We look just like you? Sure we do and there's a reason for that... and oh you naughty journalists for daring to ask..." I loved the way the resistance were cast as shifty looking characters in dodgy jackets and hats... all twelve of them. And as the enormous alien ship was still moving into position over New York the military were closing off streets... WHY? And then the mother of the kid on the motorbike breaks through the cordon to find him because he's in there 'somewhere', and fuck me she's found him within ten seconds. Lucky that I'll keep watching because I'm intrigued enough to see if it settles down and gets its act together. Simon
