Another neat option for getting to Key West would be to fly into Tampa and take the Ferry to Key West. The Ferry docks at the Seaport right down town.. Now *that* sounds like fun -- and preferable to taking connecting flights! I booked a flight from LGA into Miami, then connecting to another flight into KW.

I was in Tampa and asked some gay guy where was the Key West ferry.
He said "Speaking"

Ferrys are a common form of transport in third world countries, enjoy the experience just watch the weather forecasts, they tend to greatly exceed capacities just before hurricanes arrive... plan on boarding early in that case.

I looked into taking the ferry but the arrival and departure times were slightly limited (no afternoon trips). I was hoping to take the ferry but had to fly all the way.

Is Fort Zach the most practical beach to access from the Duval Street area?

Is Fort Zach the most practical beach to access from the Duval Street area? Yes, IMO it is also the nicest beach on the island. Part of the reason I consider it a nice beach is the homeless can't afford the three dollars to enter the state park. Besides keeping the homeless out Ft Zach offers some nice shady areas (if you need to get out of the sun for awhile) as well as a concession stand and security and is very close to Duval st. On the down side no alcohol but if you use a mug and don't make it too obvious you are not normally bothered. Hank

FYI--I understand from friends that the ferry ride can be pretty rough on the open sea (so I wouldn't take it because I'm the queen of mal de mer).
