Should we check our toys or pack them in our carry-ons?

David, the short answer to your question is that when you are on the beach at Hedo, looking out to sea, you are facing SOUTH. Yes, Hedo is on the west end of Jamaica, but on a southern facing side of a peninsula.......Jake (who is glad you got the hang of picture posting)

The sunrise picture is beautiful.
From the time of Galileo up until the time the GPS was in wide use, the position of the heavenly bodies at various times of day was the basis of navigation. A book (nautical ephemeris) tells the longitude and latitude of the sun, moon, and the planets for every day, which you adjust for the time of day to tell your position and orientation. The sun does not exactly rise in the east and set in the west (except twice a year in Jamaica, but never in the US), but it is close. When there is a conflict between the direction that you think you are facing and the position of the sun, re-orient your directions. The sun is predictable.
To picture Long Bay in Negril, imagine a big backward letter "C" with the tips on the west. At Hedo, you are on the top of the "C" and facing south.
