I have been having a problem with the explorer desktop program. After the computer has been running for a few hours, explorer quits working correctly and the desktop begins to do very strange things. The taskbar icons often disappear or get shifted strangely to one side or the other. The start window won't open correctly and other things. I found out today this is a "known" issue with Microsoft. I downloaded the hotfix and thought I installed it, but the problem remained. Thinking the fix might not have installed correctly using Firefox, I downloaded it with IE and ran it, but was told my system didn't need the fix and it refused to install. I guess the silly program doesn't know I have the problem.
The other issue, which is more of a problem, is that when VISTA locks up, which it does regularly, I have to reboot. More often than not, my mouse cursor goes crazy and I have no control over the mouse. Sometimes it opens programs by itself and does other stuff. I have to turn the computer off without being able to shut it down and try again. It works fine in safe mode, so it's not the mouse. I even hooked up a different one, still the same problem. I even wonder if I have some kinda trojan program, but have run my virus checker without anything being found. That, of course isn't perfect.
I've deleted and reinstalled the mouse driver, with no luck. Then magically, one time everything worked on boot up, and now I'm doing the final touches on my backups to begin the WASTE VISTA operation in the morning and reinstall XP.
Maybe I'll start taking a look at Linux . . .

Maybe I'll start taking a look at Linux . . . One of the things I find funny as hell, 90% of the population uses their computer just to surf the internet and to read email, but they spend a couple hundred bucks on a Microsuck OS. Ubuntu, which is a VERY user friendly version of Linux is 100% free, is supported VERY well, and out performs any MS OS on the same hardware. I think with the fact that Windows 7 will not be backwards compatible with XP/Vista software is gonna really rub alot of people the wrong way, they are gonna look for alternatives. I have been putting Ubuntu on machines going out of my shop for quite a few people here lately, once they see how easy it really is to learn how to do basic things they tell me they will never go back. I even have my Mom running Linux now, and if she can do it ANYONE can as she is as computer illiterate as they come. Now on the tech side of things I usually charge 100 bucks to reinstall windows and set up all the drivers. To help out new Linux users I will set it up and configure it, teach them a bit about how to install programs, etc. for 75 bucks. So they save around 175 bucks compared to having to buy Windows and set that up. I can build a nice little Ubuntu machine that is fine for surfing the web and checking email for about 300-350 bucks, for folks that are on a tight budget they are perfect. Now if you want to do all the fancy eye candy shit that I do, that requires a pretty stout machine to handle it, but you are still under 800 bucks for a machine. To toot my own horn a bit, I have yet to see anyone that can match my pricing for a new box be it a Windows machine or a Linux box. I don't make much on them, but I do enough volume to keep myself afloat. Something else out of the hundreds of machines I have built I have only had ONE machine that had any kind of major issues, after the second time back into the shop I just replaced the whole machine. I have the "trouble" machine running my backup server, since it has been here I have had no problems with it.

OK . . . I have OFFICIALLY FUCKING HAD IT with VISTA, that piece of SHIT!! I have spent the past two days begging my freekin' computer to work correctly, but it just looks me straight in the eyes and says, "You have GOT to be kidding!!" FUCK VISTA!! I am in the process of making sure my backups are in good working order. I'm looking through the entire hard drive to find any and all bits and pieces I need to save. I have backed up a complete image of the hard drive in addition to a separate data file, which contains most (I hope all!) of the necessary document files, pictures, etc etc. I'm going to reformat the hard drive then reinstall XP. I have the CD set to "bootable" so hopefully things will go well. Lord knows, I've had to boot from my VISTA CD a dozen times over the past couple of days so Windows can "repair" the shitty system. Say a prayer . . . I think I'll have a beer first . . . ..............Bob I am spiritually there with you Bob. Do what ever it take to keep your backup drive happy, kiss its ass, give it the bracelet you were going to give to Rhonda, WHATEVER, because until everything is off the backup drive and back on the HD, it has your nuts in its cables. God Speed!

I have wheeled the patient into the pre-op holding area, where I am about to administer the pre-op medications. The surgery to replace the brain is likely going to take a few hours. It will be a long an arduous journey. The last will with all of the required information is safely on the external backup drive.
I'll report back as the surgery progress and let everyone know how things are going.

Dr Bob Just be extremely careful you do not drop a Junior Mint into the hard drive as you are doing the extraction. The ramifications of this can be deadly.

My mother bought my 10 year old daughter Victoria a laptop running Vista at Christmas. Unbeknown to me Victoria set up a username and password on it, only to decide to ch-ch-change it a few weeks after that. A few days later when trying to log on the computer told her it didn't recognize the password, so naturally I assumed she had forgotten it. After days of trying everything we could think of I ended up downloading and using a piece of software to boot the computer from and reset the password. This I did, and the new password I set up has worked fine... until today!! Now the computer is saying it does not recognize this one either, but every time I enter it and get this message it offers me the password reminder I set up for it, so I know it can't have been changed and this must be something to do with the computer.
Vista really is a pile of crap!!

My new old operating system appears to be working fine. There's nothing like a virgin computer to spend your day with!! I have Firefox back up with all my bookmarks, passwords, etc restored, no problem. I need to get Outlook going, which I will do after lunch.

Bob?? Bob?? I have a bad feeling that something went dreadfully wrong... Bob has not checked in in 4 hours after a supposedly successful OSectomy, I wonder if the patient is still on the table and flat lined.

Could be... it would have been nice for him to share it though
Edited: If he found one before he had his firewall up, his computer was probably infected before he knew it, and hes now doing triage

I am here and all is well. I've been restoring programs, etc., all afternoon. I had a problem with Outlook, trying to get my backup working. My backup program said it restored it, but it didn't. I finally found out all my data is kept in a *.pst file or something like that. Once I restored that file, all my emails, contacts, etc, were back in place. I also started doing our taxes . . nothing like waiting till the last moment. Luckily, they are not complicated. I seem to have lost all my porno pictures, but I'm sure they are around here somewhere . . . ...........Bob

I seem to have lost all my porno pictures, but I'm sure they are around here somewhere . . . Check the contents of your .PST file. And, iffin that don't work. Go to the psssst file. I'm one of those 90%, I also got off dial up and have cable. Which is nice, but, I seldom use the computer at home.
