Harry you must be out west somewhere, for us TV coverage starts at two and the race starts at four. One of the local pubs we hang out at is having a "Daytona 500" party with free food and drink specials (the bartender gets involved in the race and sometimes you get all booze and he forgets to add the mixer). We'll be watching the race from the pub this afternoon.

Damn!! I subscribe to the North American Sports Network to get my NASCAR fix. I checked their website www.nasn.com yesterday to see what time the coverage starts and there is a message saying they are still in negotiation with NASCAR for the broadcast rights. I'm going to have to wait till tomorrow night to watch an hour of edited highlights on Channel 5 Simon

i am not a race fan....i get it that a lot of people are, but i gotta question any sport where people (and not just the drivers) die so regularly. I mean....they were trying to outlaw boxing for a while because it is so brutal....is it less brutal to die in a fiery wreck on tv?
what are you gonna do? its big business. i dont like to watch it, but i know other people do, and as long as it doesnt take the place of my beloved golf....then have at it guys.
if you are going to the race hank.....sit far enough back that you dont get hit with the shrapnel.

Mike I'm not the big NASCAR fan, my wife is. I got her the tickets to the race for Valentines Day (maybe things like this are why we've been together 34 years) and I don't think I could have given here anything that would of made her happier unless it was a surprise trip to Hedo.
We are sitting about half way up in the grandstand so I think we will be pretty safe from any flying debris.
Hank
Edited to add: We have a couple of really good friends going with us!

We are not died in the wool race aficionados but we like racing. It's more fun when you are there. (Just like hockey IMHO) Dirt track is especially fun. We also will be enjoying the July race with good friends! Mike, all sports are dangerous in some way...including golf which ranks fourth in people being hit by lighting. SourceLighting Facts (Page 473) Of course, this comes from someone who rides a motorcycle!!!

Mike I am blaming you for not getting anything done today, as I started looking for stats and sources and ended up reading about lighting for the last hour and a half. ;D
Edie (Who is now afraid to be in a convertible during a lighting storm!)

I played golf many times is Central Florida (The Lighting Capital of the World) and never had any problems there. However, the first time I took Debby golfing with me was in North Carolina and as I'm about to hit a 9 iron to the green lighting takes out a tree 20 yards from me. I turned to get in the cart and all I see is Debby 100 yards back up the fairway heading for the club house leaving me standing there with my 9 iron in my hand.
Hank
P.S. She did eventually come back and pick me up.

edie honey...im sorry....didnt mean to take up your day trying to poo poo golf!! for the record....until the golf carts start actually taking out patrons ....im guessing golf is a lot less dangerous than car racing. cars kill more people per year than cigars, and still i cant have a cigar indoors anywhere up here in the state OBVIOUSLY run by librul lainbrains ;D ;D ;D ;D

Funny thing is that I haven't been on the golf course with Hank again. I try to stay clear of him when it's lightning as he attracts it. He has almost been hit a least 7 times. He's got that magnetic personally.
Edit to correct spelling.

Edit to correct spelling. took patty out to play golf last year, and we started getting some rumbling in the back ground....storm had to be 10 to 15 miles away at least.....she absolutely insisted that we go in immediately....still to this day im not sure if she didnt want to have to worry about the storm...or if she was just plain tired of golf that day, and wanted a beer.
