Linsanity minus Lin.
I bet Jake really regrets that this isnt happening in Chicago right about now.
Soccer (known in lesser parts of the globe as "football", why, I'll never know, everyone in the US KNOWS that Football has very little to do with the feet, but this global version does and could very easily be played by armless paraplegics) has already started. Watched the US women thump the French yesterday, regrettably, no one ripped their shirts off after scoring a goal, maybe later.
My favorite observation so far is that I feel really sorry for the poor sops in florescent lime-green shirts in the stadium tasked with crowd control, sitting on chairs at the edge of the field with their backs to the action, having to watch the crowd.

Typical early event mistake... it was supposed to be the Iranian flag being shown with the US players
Edited: Do let me know if someone puts up the Welsh flag instead of the Union Jack.

Being the host country has a lot of advantages. I hear the UK has a lock on Gold in the Pub Crawl (both individual and relay), and the Synchronized Gap Minding events.

I'm hoping to meet up with him in London and form a UK/US team for a one off Pub Crawl event.

I believe the Pub Crawl should be a Decathlon consisting of the following events:
1. Ordering a drink 2. Projectile Vomiting 3. Most beers before waddling to the bathroom to pee 4. Quickest to get ejected from the pub 5. Quickest to get into a fist fight with another patron 6. First to win a darts game 7. First to nail a bartender with a dart 8. First one to pick up another man's wife (sober) 9. First one to pick up another man's wife (drunk) 10. Streaking the town after the bar closes

Well Simon, there were parts of that Opening ceremony that were real snoozers. The general consensus on this side of the pond was that the "nighttime dreams" segment was where people strayed away. Personally, I enjoyed Oldfield and Tubular Bells.
(Reporting others observations here) The giant baby was well past the creepy line, a lot of people had no concept why there would be praise of a national health care system.
Personally, I enjoyed it, but the part that will be memorable forever, Rowen's "Chariot of Fire" routine. Laughed our asses off here in this house. ONLY you guys could pull off a bit of cheek in what has always been something geared towards the spectacular, and pull it off in fine style. We also got a kick out of Craig Daniels doing the Bond escort of the Queen to the stadium, with her implied parachute entrance... once again, a little bit of cheek, loved it.
Of all the available septuagenarian (or near so) rock stars available I was embarrassed for the selection of Sir Paul. He voice is just not there any more, and it reminds me of the dark mark that Sinatra left on his legacy by hanging around too long.
I thought the Glastonbury Tor recreation an interesting focal point for stadium, but it made sense when the parade of nations started.
Made it through to the end, well, until Sir Paul started the sing along at least. Overall, WELL DONE.
Edited: Oh BTW- kept waiting for the Stig to make an appearance, but then I remembered that a) this isnt a BBC production b) that might be a bit too corporate even for the Olympics, and c) some say that he has no concept of a race that requires using your feet.

Daniel Craig? Didn't catch the whole thing but NYC papers had a field day dumping on the organizers for forgetting the Israeli athletes.

I missed the whole thing. I am curious. Did we dip the flag or not? There was much speculation leading up to the ceremonies.

I thought that whole issue was decided in 1936. It wasnt broadcast, and it hasnt been done since Hitler sat in the host dignitary box.

Edited: Oh BTW- kept waiting for the Stig to make an appearance, but then I remembered that a) this isnt a BBC production b) that might be a bit too corporate even for the Olympics, and c) some say that he has no concept of a race that requires using your feet Thanks Gordon. I thought the whole ceremony was truly stunning. But of course it was the very Britishness of it that made me, and so many millions of others here, so incredibly proud. Danny Boyle deserves a knighthood for putting it together (and will probably get one...) I really enjoyed the NHS dream section, but then like most of my fellow countrymen I am fiercely proud of our health care system and don't take kindly to criticism of it. I hope Mitt Romney, who was in the audience, enjoyed it as much as we all did here And yes, I loved Mike Oldfield too. (Incidentally that section was also a celebration of the amazing work done by the Great Ormond Street Hospital, a children's hospital in London, hence the word GOSH lighting up the stadium at one point) I was quite disgusted to read that NBC cut out the beautiful 'Abide With Me' tribute to the victims of the July 7th 2005 London terrorist bombings. Imagine the outrage if it was the other way round and the BBC cut out a 9/11 tribute. The James Bond/Queen thing was excellent... especially Daniel Craig power-mincing his was through Buckingham Palace. And loved the Mr Bean/Chariots of Fire scene!! Also loved the music through the decades section, some great musical choices there, which culminated in the Arctic Monkeys performing the Beatles son Come Together. (A point of interest for Beeb - Arctic Monkeys are such huge fans of John Cooper Clarke, who I have idolised for most of my life and recently become friends with and whose song Evidently Chickentown was played at the end of the penultimate episode of The Sopranos, that his poem Out of Control Fairground was printed on the sleeve of their CD single Fluorescent Adolescent and was also the inspiration behind the single's video). As for McCartney... what a joke!! Once again he bounded onto a stage at a national (well in this case global) event doing his cheeky Scouser, thumbs up to the Queen routine and reminded us that he was the Beatle that the other Beatles all hated. It should have been the Rolling Stones up there belting out Start Me Up, or Bowie singing Heroes rather than Macca doing his usual Hey Jude sing-along. Until Friday I had little interest in the games. I could take them or leave them. Friday changed that and inspired me to watch several hours of the weekend's events. I'm also seeing if I can swing a trip over to East London (it's about 40 minutes from me) with my daughter to take her to an event.

Watching Michael Phelps in interviews, he seems to be a zombie, he's there, he's competing, but he's not really fired up and his mind seems to be elsewhere. Saw an interview with his Mom and sisters, have to wonder if he is only there because of them.
BIG disappointment in Michigan. Woman gymnast Jordyn Wieber from the Lansing area came in fourth overall in the floor exercises (parallel bars, vault, etc) but wont be one of the 24 competing for Gold because the rules limit the field to no more than 2 from any country, she was the #3 American. She will still take part in the team competition, and the individual vault competition, but cant compete for the individual overall.

BIGGEST disappointment so far however has been the cool temps that have sent the women beach volleybal players into what look like scuba wetsuits, NOT TO MENTION, no cameras behind the players during serves... its almost to the "What's the point" level.
