I finally got tired of Firefox insisting that I needed v7.0.1 so I installed it on Monday. Since then my 64 bit version of Win7 has crashed 4 times. 3 of those times have been overnight when nothing is running (supposedly), and the system did an auto restart. The system log notes that there was a recovery from an unexpected shut down, but I have not found anything that indicates the reason for the unexpected shutdown.
I have not found anything online with others reporting this issue, so there may be something else going on. But the installation on 10/3 followed by 4 crashes of what had been a very stable platform since I put it together is highly suspect. The troubling thing is that the 3 overnight crashes have occurred while FF is not running. Maybe some stray memory issues, I dont know.
I have FF v4 stored on disk, I may revert to it if I cannot find a copy of v6 out there somewhere. OTHERWISE, I may migrate to IE9 which has a 64 bit version that came with my OS. NOT my first choice.

Was FF 7 installed as an upgrade or did you do an uninstall of the older version, then re-install with 7? If you did an in-place upgrade, maybe un-install and re-install might repair it. Before a re-install, I'd check the Registry for any stray entries for either Mozilla or FF.

My Firefox is version 7.0.1, and I haven't had any system stability issues. I don't use it, mind you, because it is a dog, but it is installed. I'm using Chrome on my 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium system.

Beeb, I had not seen the page you linked, but you are right, it is interesting. Not sure if it is the same issue or not. I can definitely isolate the start of the issue to the installation to about 12 hours after the installation of FF7.
Of course that could be a coincidence, but I am suspicious.
I will check back later.

Bob, FF has been suffering a severe case of version inflation this summer, going from v4 to v7 in a matter of months. Sort of like the American flag having a few precious months with 49 stars, you managed to grab v5... hold onto it it could be a collectors item in 20 or 30 years.
As for me.. this morning I was updating a website tha I am responsible for. I wanted to check out the html of one of the pages, so I clicked on it from the directory list. I have html formatted files to be opened directly into FF... BAM I got a blue screen when FF v7 opened.
v7 is now history, v4, which I had as a backup file from my system build, is now installed. I did notice that is seems faster than v7. I plan to turn updates off for the time being and see if thing stabilize.

Is there any way to go backwards? I didn't save any old versions, would love to go back to version 3 or so. When it was fast and slick.

I dont know what Mozilla keeps available on their site. Downloading FF from third party sites has long been a hazardous venture. I happened to have v4 in a backup before my old computer died so it was easy to go back to it... but yes v3.6 or so did seem to be the "best of breed" and would be a nice point to revert to.

I have to come clean on this one -- it's a recent pic of myself PhotoShopped (in reality, my hair is MUCH grayer).

Is there any way to go backwards? I didn't save any old versions, would love to go back to version 3 or so. When it was fast and slick. I have the executable files for Firefox Setup 5.0 and 4.0.1. I honestly don't know if those files would default to the version listed or just install the latest. They aren't large and I could email them to you if you like. .............Bob

Thanks, Bob, but that's not necessary. I remember version 4 being the first one that sucked. I might try Buckwheat's link to go back to a 3.something installation.

Ah ha! Found a Firefox 3.6.10 installation file in my "downloads" folder! I'll give that a try and report back.
edit....
Well it installed without a hitch, it is performing fine for the moment. I'll see how it goes over the next few days (or hours) (or minutes!)........Jake
edit again....
THIS is what I'm talking about! When I move my cursor to a link, it immediately turns to the little "hand" icon which means the link is active and clickable. With all the Firefoxes from 4.0 to present, I was getting a "hesitation" of a second to a second and a half. Sounds trivial, I knew, but very annoying, and never happened in Chrome. But this old "retro" FF 3.6 from way back in September 2010 is working fast as hell!

Just an update. The computer is stable again working with v4. No crashes since removing v7. I am tempted to try reverting to v3.6.10

FF 3.6.10 is working great and I'm very happy with it. But it keeps asking me if I want to upgrade to 3.6.20!
That's like your grandfather telling you he just got the latest Al Jolson album!
