This past weekend we helped move our daughter into her dorm to start her freshmen year at college. Of course I'm proud and taking a moment to tell you guys. She's a hard working kid and is enrolled as an English Education major. (maybe my grammatical short comings inspired her, After we unpacked and helped set up the dorm room, we hit the road for a Sunday at the beach. While driving down the NY State thruway, I called to wish her good luck and assorted fatherly advice, (yet again) the voice-mail picked up and I started to leave a brief message but I had trouble after the first sentence. With my eyes welled and voice suddenly breaking with emotion it hit me all at once. I just left my little girl on a new endeavor and the feeling was very similar to the day I dropped her off at kindergarten just a few 12 years ago.

My daughter did this twice. Her freshman year she went to Troy and at the start of her junior year she transfered to Auburn, so I got to have all this fun on more than one occasion.

Her room is in a co-ed tower with the sexes separated by wing. For whatever reason, her floor is all girls. Daddy's dreams do come true! Sex is bad, very bad....... ;D ;D ;D

Den and I met on a co-ed floor at an Ottawa university. From what I remember, the all-girl floors had the worst reputations as "party girls" ~ sorry, Gary!
Seriously, you should be very proud of your little girl (as I know you are). She's about to embark on one of life's biggest adventures.

Ann lived on the dorm floor one up from me (to make matters worse, she was the RA on the floor, in theory enforcing the rules). I "helped" her out a lot on the evenings she had the "duty phone" (essentially she was on call and could not leave her room, unless she got a crisis call). I wont go into what happened in the sauna on coed nights, or the rumors of what happened in there on womens nights. Yeah Steve, she's safe ;D ;D Edited: BTW- Gary, she forgot your existence within a couple hours of your leaving when someone mentioned a party at a nearby frat house

You know, I'll never get used to this sex thing. If it's with a significant other, it's certainly easier to deal with but I'd rather she get the same abstinence treatment I got at school, no matter how much I begged.
When I was bringing up some of her packages from the car I saw this months "Glamour" magazine with her stuff.
The headlines are:
1) New sex do and don'ts (how to handle anything naked)
2) 8 things guys crave in bed
Shoot me now!!!

I just thought of 8 things I crave in bed.
1) an additional woman 2) an additional woman 3) an additional woman 4) an additional woman 5) an additional woman 6) an additional woman 7) an additional woman 8) perhaps an additional woman

ENOUGH!! My daughters are 13 and 11 and you guys are really scaring me. However, I will continue to believe delude myself that if I continue to work hard at the gym and stay young at heart I can scare those young punks from getting any ideas about my daughters.

bigdog
Thanks!
My daughter is 18 and yes I agree with you, if they are raised right and have a clear head I should be at ease. Still however, boys on the scene are new to me and since she's my oldest, I'm learning too. The 2 boyfriends she had briefly in high school were very good kids, I liked when they were here at the house.
Many years ago I dropped of my girlfriend (now wife) at 5:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning after a long Saturday night of partying. Although dressed, she had all her underwear in her hands as she was greeted by her father (now my father-law) exiting the house for military invasion training drills at West Point. (dressed for action) He's a retired Army Sargent and National Guardsman. (40 years)
Now it's my turn......!
(We live very close to West Point)
I'll never forget that moment, we never spoke about it.

Si-
You might realize this already but your 13 year old is entering the age of romance very shortly. A very sweet and outgoing young lady in my neighborhood is 13 and has more male friends than female.
The 13 and 14 year old girls here are hanging out with the boys now, I see them at the ball field, the pizza shops and school yards.
Additionally, the next generation utilizes text messaging for the simplest need or thought and I think this has sped up the courtship process.

ha ha ha ha ha....you boys!
I have 3 nieces, ages 1, 8, and 11.
I predict one will be a virgin at marriage, one will be a slut (auntie is so proud and can't wait to demonstrate how to wear a condom on your head!) and one will a serial monogamist who starts having sex in college. It's all good if it works for them and they get no dreaded permanent disease (most VD is curable).
What is it about men wanting to protect a gal's (esp. their daughter's) virginity? I never hear parents talk this way about their sons. Just curious!

I never hear parents talk this way about their sons. Just curious! My solution was always to encourage my daughter and her girlfriends to consider lesbianism. I kept telling them that men were scum and their lives would be much easier if they would embrace an alternative lifestyle. None of them accepted my well though out advice. Probably just as well since they all turned out as very well adjusted young adults. But they sure kept us on our toes growing up.

Just curious!Dear Curious To answer your question: I'd have to say it's about your daughter or son being safe and secure, after all that's what every parent wants for their children. Beyond that everything else is gravy. My daughter, feeling the pressure from me one day after a dose of paternal advice quipped back at me as to what speeches her brother was going to get. I replied "The same"! I give my son and daughter nearly identical speeches on respecting and understanding the opposite sex. It's my job.

I got a call from my daughter and she was thrilled with her instructors. She said that one instructor curses constantly and has a liberal policy on attendance because in his words "If a girl in a bikini shows up at your room I don't expect you to come to class." My daughter says "it's awesome because they (the instructors) are like real people".

I look at all we say about raising our kids the right way...I just want to mention,Two sad cases that I am glad are not my Problem..First to go along with what everybody wishes would happen to there kid's...My Niece..she's around 36 now...Very smart girl..College educated with a great paying job..Sound's good so far..The sad part ! She is so socially inept..I know of only 1 date she has been on..A blind date My Kids set up for her...Thats about it...I guess my point here...as sad as it may Sound...I would rather my kids a had a little of that infamous reputation...Than to be a lonley old hag for the rest of her life..Thats one
Yesterday in my Doctors office..In walk's an older woman..I'm not sure her age.. But with her,a person..Short hair..very short..Very anarexic (sp) almost to the point of a waife Covered with Tattoo's..As this person sat there..I finally figured out it was a she...And this took a while too..Remind you now It's still Aug..Tee shirts are the norm..This is how thin this girl is...Trying not to stare ..I realized Both her leg's had multiple cut's and scars...I have heard of branding and scaring before..This was a first for me to see..
Now for the serious Question here...Would you feel better knowing your Daughter was. #1 excepted by her friends..Down, a few beers , and maybe spend a secret night alone with her Boyfriend......... #2....Be so inept that the biggest thrill in her life was from reading cosmo and watching soaps on the dvr. #3.... Have a child crying out for so much attention as the one I saw at the Dr.s....

bigdog, there's no question about it. Many people aren't so lucky and whatever happened to go wrong whether it's a troubled personality, genealogy or environment, it's sad.
I'm fortunate and therefore able to make jokes about my vulnerable concerns as a father, many aren't.
My wife is much more liberal. She accepts all the new hurdles easily, so she gets to lovingly chide and laugh at me as I worry a bit.

HA! I started with 44 students in two Engl Comp classes on Tuesday, and they all came back today. Didn't scare away any of them--and I try to instill fear with vicious threats of hard grading....alas. One darling little kiss-ass actually told me my class was her favorite class so far. We'll see how long that lasts, my pretty!
