...looks like things got tough. "Oliver!" "Pufnstuf" Idol DiesFor Jack Wild, the 1970s and 1980s were about lots of drinking and less work. Still, the former teen idol once said, he was grateful for the journey--"because I have learnt a hell of a lot." Wild, the Oscar-nominated bundle of energy who burned bright, if briefly, in the late 1960s in Oliver! and the classic kids' show H.R. Pufnstuf, died Wednesday of mouth cancer. He was 53. Even before his death, Wild's signature Cockney accent had been silenced by surgery that removed his tongue and voice box. According to the U.K. news agency, the Press Association, the cancer-stricken actor relied on his wife to read his lips and translate his words to others. In 1969, a 16-year-old Wild earned a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nomination for playing the scruffy Artful Dodger in Oliver!, the musical rendering of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist. That same year, Wild landed on Living Island with his magic talking flute in the Sid and Marty Krofft production, H.R. Pufnstuf. The series was popular enough to warrant a 1970 big-screen film of the same name.

Now that is a sad fate for the person who probably singlehandedly instilled in me my love for british accents.
Zilla (once upon a summers day, just a dream from yesterday, a boy and his magic golden flute...)

He wasn't my first (that place belongs to Danny Kaye in "the Court Jester"), but i believe Jack Wild might have be the closest in age to me out of all my television crushes.
Zilla (I'd do anything, for you dear, anything, for you mean everything, to me)

I was trying like heck to think of the tune. Thanks for typing it up here! I looked forward to the shows when we could get them on our tv. I only found it once in awhile on Saturday mornings and that was on UHF channels!

Doesn't he look like he could have been a good candidate to play Bilbo Baggins?

Sure does!
But he'd have to have someone else do the speaking part.

OMG! What a trip down memory lane.
Witchiepoo and her Voom Broom Jimmy and his flute PufnStuf in those stupid white go-go boots....
Wow...what a trip!
I think I'll have a bowl of Sugar Frosted Flakes and reminisce.
All I need now is Bozo's Circus with Bob Trendler and his Big Top Band.

I recall that the 'Pufnstuf' name caused parents a HUGE amount of distress over the implied drug connotations.
