If you haven't seen it yet, you all should really check out "The Office" which airs on NBC on Tuesday nights at 8:30 CST. Ohmigod! It is so friggin' funny. I haven't seen a show this funny in a long time. Laugh after laugh after laugh. If y'all don't enjoy it, I'll give you a free NBH next time we're at Hedo! Carla

A brief pause before this post is followed by a torrent of replies all saying, "The original version that ran on BBC America was better, dammit!".

The BBC version is available on DVD. You should consider renting one (or more), just for the sake of comparison, if nothing else.

Maybe they'll show the US version over here and we'll get to compare it to the original which was the funniest British sitcom in years. I'm sure it's good. In the UK we are lucky to enjoy the pick of America's TV shows, including over the years comedies such as MASH, Seinfeld, Cheers, Friends, Frasier, etc. We make a lot of great TV shows that you are unlikely to ever see unless you get BBC America, and I really do think it's sad that when we've made something that NBC acknowledges is worldclass like The Office, their answer is to remake it in America's own likeness, rather than let people experience it in the form it was written and intended, as we do with American shows.

We got Monty Python in it's original form. I'd hate to imagine a remake with Bell Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Charlie Sheen!......Jake

I agree. The only problem is trying to coordinate the vacation schedules. Carla, you have to be fair and at least let us know when your next trip is planned. That way, if I can make it, I can decide not to like the show just so I can collect.

I think the Arabs are even more guilty of this than the Americans. They watch American news on TV, completely rewrite it, then run a much worse version on Al-Jazeera.

Tsk! Tsk! This just shows you didn't read my trip report on that "other" board. I'm trying to wean myself off the "other" board (Brand X?) for reasons that should be painfully obvious. Having said that, though, I'll definitely make an attempt at catching up on your trip reports, if I can only find the strength to point my browser at a certain URL ...

I think there was a British version of "Married With Children", too, but I'm not sure which one came first......Jake It was called Married for Life. Back in the 80's and early 90's the BBC produced some truly dire early evening sitcoms and this was one of them. Maybe they'd run out of original ideas so they made a British version of Married with Children which recreated the characters and their lives, but with new names and new scripts. It was awful and they dropped it after one season. Simon

For one, the storylines were exactly like the US version of the show. Line for line. Also, it was too difficult for me to understand that cockney accent. Made it too difficult to find the punchlines. Oh well. I'll stick with the US version.

Oh well. I'll stick with the US version. The US version is a straight remake using the same scripts, so they would be almost line for line. The accents are just a generic British accent, I can see you'd struggle if you ever met a real cockney!! I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it Simon

How did they manage to suck most of the humor and all of the charm out of such an incredible show? In the original, David Brent is a fool, but there's also a sad side and a vulnerability to him that is completely absent in his American counterpart who is just a jerk. The actor playing the US version of Tim tried too hard to copy Martin Freeman's mannerisms, and any potential to produce a great US version of Mackenzie Crook's Gareth was drowned at birth by whoever cast that abomination to play him. If I had never seen the original and I had watched this there was nothing that would make me go out of my way to watch it again. We've enjoyed some of America's finest comedy imports over the years, it's a shame NBC replied by bastardizing the best of ours. Simon

Carla, we've seen it, and it is a riot. It's a different type of humor - a bit over the edge (I can't think of the word for it.) We thought it was hilarious, and had my parents watch it, and they just sat there looking at us like we were strange because we thought it was funny.

I know exactly what you mean, Renee. I have told my friends to watch it and they just don't get the humor. I guess it's so hilarious to me because I feel like I've worked with the same sort of folks. How would I describe that type of humor? Hmmm....satire, maybe?
