I gotta hand it to this gal.....she was some trailor trash before, wrote this book and now is a fuckin' gazzilionaire! MORE POWER TO HER! WHAT a GREAT STORY! With that said, I picked up Rhonda's copy of the first Harry Potter, painfully read about 50 pages before I could just read no more. This fantasy stuff just seems WAY OVERBOARD to me. I could not get into it at all. I can see how some folks might like this, but there is just NO intellectual appeal AT ALL! It's just BRAIN DEAD LUNACY......the same as sittin' in front of some idiot video game. Am I wrong? Does anyone else out there find this shit to be completely mindless and devoid of any useful purpose? Might I just dig shit out of my ass for the same entertainment? What say you, BB? ANYONE? ...........Bob ;D

I haven't read the Harry Potter books, but my understanding is that they are PRIMARILY for kids, with adult readers only a secondary audience. I might be wrong about that, but if not, maybe that's why you couldn't get into it, Bob......Jake

The only good thing about the Harry Potter books, is that it has made more kids interested in reading. However the waiting on lines all night to get the books and all the fad shit that goes with it proves that people will just jump on any bandwagon just to be a part of something.
I agree with Bob, and BB ? What a way to start the day...

I haven't read them yet, but a friend loaned hers to me to take on our November Jamaica trip. We spend a bunch of days up on the cliffs after Hedo & I figured it'd be easy reading after the mind bending drugs I'm sure I'll ingest the 10 days prior.

My wife and I have both read (or listened to on CD) the entire series. I am currently listening to the latest installment. I find the books entertaining and classic good versus evil, well written, and with extreme care taken for story continuity from book 1 thru book 6.
Bob.. obviously fantasy is not your genre for reading. That is all well enough, but does that make it a target for demonization as some sort of Librul plot (I know you were tongue in cheek there, I am just tossing it back at you there). Fantasy is escapism, and that is the entire intent of what is in fact a pre-teen/teen oriented series of books. And in this, JK Rowlings is probably THE most successful aurthor of our generation (I refer to her writing, not the money she has made). This IS QUALITY material and worthy of consideration.
As far as the comparison to a video game... JESUS FUCKIN H CHRIST BOB... Would not you rather have them (the kids who devour this) sitting READING a book REGARDLESS of whether it was 'devoid of any useful purpose' than sitting in front of a TV playing video or watching the best of Hollywood (sarcasm intended). SINCE WHEN does reading require a "USEFUL PURPOSE" and for that matter, SHOW ME useful content in todays popular books.
God bless that the kids are gathered in books stores across this country on publication day rather than in some alley, park , or whereever getting pregnant, smoking dope, or shooting whatever. This should be CLASSIC of what conservatives think America should be like.
If nothing else, the kids who read this 'devoid of any useful purpose' crap, are learnig that they CAN READ a 700 page book with no pictures, and when the time is right they will be much better prepared and EAGER to take on the true classics of literature.
Back on your medication Bob.
Jake... You love the LOTR's, and you mentioned once that you have read the series... THis being the case, I think you would enjoy the Harry Potter series for the same qualities that made JRR Tolkein books soo successful... if you can adjust your expectations to the characters ages and to focus Rowlings had of writing to that age group.
Gordon
PS BB.. you should not even try... stick to books with LOTS of picture, I am sure that 'graphic' novels are geared right towards you. ;D

PS BB.. you should not even try... stick to books with LOTS of picture, I am sure that 'graphic' novels are geared right towards you. If by 'graphic novel' you mean literature such as Hustler, then dude, I'm all over it. I think it's both novel *and* graphic.

My daughters aged 8 and 10 are both big Harry Potter fans. In a day and age when there are so many other distractions to keep from reading, if they are reading these books because they WANT to then that can only be a good thing for their young minds.
Personally I'd rather watch watch paint dry.

THis being the case, I think you would enjoy the Harry Potter series for the same qualities that made JRR Tolkein books soo successful....... Have I mentioned that once or twice? Yes, I've been a huge geek for the books since the 1970s. But I'm not really a fantasy or wizardry fan. What I love about LOTR is the depth and geekiness of it all, with the multiple languages and in-depth history. I would like to read the Potter books "one of these days", it's just way down on my list of priorities.......Jake

Okay, so I'm an older kid at heart. I like the Potter books, I have the movies on DVD. I am a true sci-fi geek and like to get lost into some other land, it's better than being at work sometimes. Yeah, the Potter books are geared for the younger generation, but heck... I'd love to be a kid again. Try reading past the the first 50 pages, maybe it'll spark an interest. But if not, I have a wall that needs watching! I am also a huge LOTR fan (got the books - seen the movies at least twice), I have read all the books Robert Jordan has written on the WOT, he's got 2 left in his series and it's killing me. Throw in all the Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galatica (early version), Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, Deep Space 9, and Star Gate SG-1 - then I should be a walking pocket protector. I guess Potter books would suit me! Just a big kid at heart here.

OK OK OK........(Bob, back on his HALDOL!) My point was not that fantasy isn't good, just I don't get into the Harry Potter shit! I'm not saying it ain't good stuff, and that some folks, well obviously a LOT OF FOLKS really like it! I guess I'd just rather jerk off than read Harry Potter. At least then I can fantasize about Zilla! <smooch!> to Zilla! ...........Bob
