I'm in Wisconsin and a trucker friend of ours called us to let us know that at midnight tonight, the price for diesel hence probably the rest of the grades was going up $.30. Hope some of you can take advantage and fill up tonight. I filled up my car and my husband diesel truck and $100 later.... well, this whole thing sucks. I think I'll work from my house from now on!

If it makes you feel better, the refined product has gotten way out in front of crude prices due to refining capacity down. The refining capacity will come back. Given that world crude prices stabilize a little, the current increases in gasoline prices should be temporary.
I am curious, have any of you around the country noticed ch-ch-changes in driving habits? The traffic is finally slowing down some here in Texas. The smaller cars (particularly the hybrids) are selling well but the Expeditions are gathering dust. We need to take some notes from the Europeans on energy use. We can't keep living like this.

I haven't noticed and major ch-ch-changes in anyone driving habit or traffic be a little lighter.
The SUV's and Pickups keep rolling out here so who knows?

Wholsesale gasoline is up another $.32/gallon today while crude prices are down some. The squeeze is on the refined product. If there was ever a time for the country to stay off the road for a Labor Day weekend, this is it.

This is a tough weekend for some people to stay home. End of summer, last 3 day weekend until November. I agree Tex people should but they won't at least not out here.
We are getting ready to start grape harvest next Wednesday and estimated fuel coast is going to be $3,000 to $4,000 more this year than last year. Red Dye Diesel here up to $2.85 per gallon.

I reported on another thread that our gas prices jumped yesterday $.20 to $2.89. Sorry for the misinformation... it jumped ANOTHER $.30 today to $3.19... so thats 18% in 2 days... NOT bad, NOT bad at all.
Heard a report that the major oils companies are making record profits, BUT that instead of pushing that money into exploration, the companies are BUYING BACK STOCK to drive their share prices up even further (maybe the board members are about to exercise some stock options??). Anybody else heard this?? I will try to post a link.

Gordon As an independent that puts up with shit out of the majors on a weekly basis (don't start me on BP Amoco this week), I am hard pressed to want to defend the major oil companies, but in fairness, just what would you suggest that they do? Explore where? Anwar, the Gulf Shelf, off of California or Florida? the middle east? Venezuela? Where would you have them build more refineries? We need them, but no one wants them in their neighborhood. Oil exploration? I can tell you that it's still out there to be found, but it's harder (and more expensive) to find than it was a few years ago and many of the the most promising places have been declared politically off bounds. IMHO, a look in the garage and the showroom floor is at least as illustrative of the problem as a look at Exxon. We have treated our energy resources like it was a pie eating contest. Our current consumption patterns are unsustainable. If you think gas prices are bad now after Katrina, hurricane season isn't over yet. Pray that the Houston area does not get hit before New Orleans recovers.

Apparently, here in NY, the gas prices are over $3.50 at various spots out on Long Island. In the 'burbs of Long Island, the car is much more essential than in the boroughs of the city. www.newyorkgasprices.com/

Tex said
Tex, very fatalistic point of view. Basically is sounds like your saying that the majors are of the opinion 'whats the point, we might as well give up, max out our short term outlook for our board and major stockholder, and completely ignore any longterm downside'.
I realize the constraints that are being placed on the industry. Many of those are spurrious, many are in response to piss poor (mis)management practices (or total lack of them).
Is their more oil to be found? The last expert that I heard (and I understand that this is like palm reading) estimated that we are near the peak (within 10-15 years that is) of production and we have discovered about 1/2 of what is 'out there', and we have found the easy 50%.
OK, given ALL of the caveats of THAT statement, the obvious fact is that there is more oil out there waiting to be found. Its in the 'difficult' places of the world (both geographically and politically), and THAT ALONE makes it very expensive to find.
If I am at the gas pump paying $3/gallon (soon $4 maybe), I, personally, dont mind it as much, if I KNOW that the extra money is the result of market forces balencing supply/demand. IF OTOH, I am paying those prices knowing that a portion of that is going to the honored practice of buying back a corporations own stock to lift that share price so some few individuals can make themselves richer at my expense, I GET PISSED ROYALLY.
I would be willing to bet that in a few years, the majors will be cash strapped and pleading for tax breaks, and NO ONE, will be willing to point the finger at the piss poor cash management they are practicing right now.
BTW... didnt they get some tax breaks in the recent Energy Bill?? What the FUCK is the point of giving them a tax break, if they have so much cash on hand that the only thing they can do is buy back their own stock?
Sorry... getting off my soap box now. Basically, I dont mind shelling out $$ out of my wallet to either the government or major oil companies, IF I feel that it is going to a good/necessary cause. But I feel like the majors are reeming my ass right now to line their own bank accounts rather than trying to make the future better.

Closer to home... why is San Juan Puerto Rico so cheap?? No Fed taxes?? San Juan is a dependent of your tax dollars. Everything is gold plated, from highways to post offices, etc.... there is no federal income tax. The Puerto Rico tax maxes at 7% and is not enforced anyway. Makes you want to move.

I think we might have the cheapest gas in the country right now. Our little tiny corner store down the road... the owners have a policy that they dont ch-ch-change the price unless their prices get changed.
The last delivery they had was over a week ago, so we still have $2.89 gas. AND our WalMart has been expanding and put in a gas station, it just opened a couple weeks ago and ITS at $2.99... everyone else in the area is $3.40 (that was yesterday of course, so I may be talking nonsense this morning).

I've been holed up in the house for a couple of days and finally ventured out.
Local gas prices are $2.99 while the gas station at Davis-Monthan Air Force base is $2.63
Ususally it's only a 5 cent difference, but this was truly amazing. Wish we were driving my car as it has a 1/4 tank of gas.

Here in Cornwall, Ontario, gas was $.96 a litre on Monday, $1.05 on Tuesday, 1.18 on Wednesday, 1.25 on Thursday, and $1.28 yesterday. I think that's about $5.30 cdn a gallon (about $4.40 US)!

The prices around here are in the $3.29 range, I think. I haven't bought gas in a few weeks, and still have a half a tank. That'll probably last me about a month. (I don't drive much) I think I'll just wait it out for the peak to erode. I might regret it, but I like taking the contrarian approach.......Jake

Costco & Walmart & local indy dealer and shell - all OUT OF GAS. Found some at a Chevron for $3.27. 2nd day Costco has been out.
DAMBIT. I can't imagine travelling across states....I'd be stopping at every open station....
Today was the first time I noticed it that bad and by evening...I saw the first vehicle being pushed to a gas station....poor bastards got it into the station finally....to find out it had no gasoline either.......

$3.49 here in Concord, NC. Since Wed has been going up it seems by the hour.
Have heard it should start coming down next week. We are the last stop from the pipe line that was shut down in New Orleans last week.
BTW, Steve is here and he told me that one place in VA was at $5.99. Not sure if that was from the crazy rumor that all gas stations in MD/DC/VA would shut down on Fri - Tues...

Looks like for once we might be cheaper than other places in the USA. We are usually the most expensive.
This morning $3.10 per gallon regular, supreme $3.30.
Gas prices have also gone higher than Diesel prices for the first time in 6 months out here. Diesel $3.25
Joe.

Last we heard is that they are soon only going to allow people to buy 10 gallons at a time. I expect that there will be many places out of gas alot. I just hope that there will be enough gas to fly the plane to Jamaica in October!
