Hello all - this forum is for discussing politics; American, Canadian, European, Jamaican, whatever. Try to be erudite about it, but failing that, at least be entertaining!....Jake

Hello, Politics! You suck! You've taken wonderful friends and made enemies of them! (Well, not all, just the stupid ones). But, maybe, politics, you ain't so bad after all. You've mobilized people who wouldn't normally discourse on World Events, and have awakened their (typical) American laissez faire attitude (oops! that's a french term, isn't it?), and the attitude that 'if he's the president, he must be right'. Well, many months after "Mission Accomplished" we have lost oh so many young, vital, ambitious American men. To - liberate? people from their homes and families. Sorry Jake, but while I'm sure it sucked to live in Iraq under Saddam, I'm pretty certain it sucks more to live in Iraq under American invasion. Freedom? We can NOT impose Freedom on people who don't necessarily want it or need it. Their culture goes back thousands and thousands of years. Yeah, Saddam needed a bullet in the back of his head, in the CIA of yore that would have been easily accomplished. And another dickhead would take his place (well, while they were at it, they would have to waste his dickhead(squared) sons, too)
Now I see today that the National Guard will be "mobilized" (aka sent into the killing zone) for up to 24 months at a time. The "National Guard", as I know it, are guys who, as the commercial says, expect one weekend a month and 2 weeks per year. These guys have careers, homes, wives, families. Yes, they are, or should be, aware that their contract with the USA has a provision for mobilization, but come on! The National Guard? By their very nomenclature, shouldn't that mean defending our shores and homeland against invaders? These guys never saw this coming. And guess what? In the near, and far, future, there will be way way way less guys signing up for the National Guard, or Reserves.

Oh Irish here we go again.
We only discussed this a 1000 times. When you sign up for the National Guard, you are aware that you can be called up to active duty any time.
These individuals can not play dumb and say " We never knew this was going to happen".
They signed up, they knew this could happen so be it.
Joe.

Yeah, Ikinow!! You guys have got to admit that in the past 10-15 years it was just that - one weekend a month and two weeks a year and massive return on that investment. The Reserves and the National Guard are guys like you and I - families, careers, which can totally tolerate one weekend a month and two weeks a year. Yes, they signed the paper committing them to mobilization for 12, 18, 24 months. But they signed up in peacetime. They are kids, seeing a huge signing bonus and promise of college education - they know nothing of VietNam, Korea, WWII or even Desert Storm. They want the signing bonus and to be an American Soldier. OK, young guys will come through it either dead, maimed, or psychologically f**ked and the USA will treat them like the detrius that they have treated the VietNam vets. But the National Guard and Reserves are not like enlisted men - they ALREADY have careers and a wife and 3.2 children. And never expected (who did?) to be mobilized for 12 or 24 months!
And what does the USA do for t hem? They cut their benefits and close VA hospitals. As much as we are 'protected' from the ickiy visions of coffins coming home, we are even more protected from the maimed coming home, who will collect disability benefits on the government tit for the rest of thier lives - to the tune of $1000 per month or so.

Joe, and Ron too, you have to admit that this will have a huge impact on 'going forward' enlistment in National Guard or Reserves. So when we get whacked again, where are our "National Guard" -- they're in Iraq!! Do either of you have teen kids wondering how they will make tuition? Until recently, tempted by those TV commercials?

Yeah it has been one weekend a month for the last 15 years or so but shit happens.
They signed up, they know they could get called up, and they did, shit happens. Yeah, they could get killed, maimed and yes maybe even fu*ked up in the head. They have have families, they have careers, but again they signed up on there own, no one signed their name for them.
They might have to serve 12 to 24 months, that is a lot less than the men that faught in WWII. When they went ,they were there for the duration of the war, some guys over 4 years.
I have to agree that the benefits if they are injured suck, but again shit happens.
I don't like seeing our people getting killed, maimed or whatever, but I am tried of hearing that they had no idea of what they were getting into. They knew, they took the chance, and they got called up.
Joe.
