We have a new Pope! Don't know who it is yet. But I'm betting on a Muslim Pope, in the interest of diversity.

Great move by the church. Another Pope with one foot in the grave. Real smart move.

The media hates the new Pope. Or, perhaps more accurately, the media is using the new Pope to voice their hatred of The Church.
Scanning my Yahoo News feed, I find three of four headlines decidedly unfavorable:
UNFAVORABLE: The new pontiff, while a "voice for the voiceless," is not without some political baggage. New pope must deal with divided church in United States. New pope healthy despite having only one lung. (Okay, call it a back-handed compliment)
FAVORABLE: Latin American pope may reverse declining Catholicism.
I think we can see where the media is lining up here........

I don't hate the church, will maybe I do. Being brought up a Catholic and going to Catholic schools has left me a little on the sour side, well maybe real bitter.
The media is doing nothing different than it does with any other 24 hour new cycle. They are stating their opinon.
I personally think the church fucked up. This guy is a lunger, 76 years old. Hell he can kick off at any minute. I don't give a rats ass he is not going to try to modernize the church. What they need is a young Pope, some guy no older than 50 that has modern ideas and wants to see the church progress to the present not dwell in the past.
Hell they should of dug old Saint Peter up dusted him off and sat him in the chair. You would have gotten just about the same results that this new guy is going to get. I lay odds that he is gone in 5 to 7 years.
Yes Latin America is going to love this guy and if it wasn't for the Latino's in my area to go to the Catholic Church they could close the doors for lack of attendance.

I told you they should have dug up old Saint Pete. They can stick to their roots and continue to be find pedophiles. Dumb, dumb, dumb.VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - In his first public Mass, Pope Francis urged the Catholic Church on Thursday to stick to its roots and shun modern temptations, warning that it would become just "a compassionate NGO" if it forgot its true mission.

Good for him. I have no use for a religion that ch-ch-changes with the times. We have Hollywood for that. Right and wrong are always the same. It's nice to know that there are institutions that respect that.

The Catholic Church has caused more harm than good in it's history, Maybe it's time it ch-ch-changes.
The Catholic Church is all about what can you do for me, not what can I do for you.

That's the beauty of formal religions. If you agree with them, you can join them. If you don't agree, you can ignore them. Pure personal choice. I like it.
If only Government gave us the same level of options! But alas, they don't. They expect you to accept their decrees and decisions, if you agree with them or not. That makes me like religion over government every day of the week.

Roman Catholicism appears to be embraced more in the developing world and less in the developed world. In the US, the church is a big business with some well publicized scandals. In Vietnam, the church is life or death to many thousands and was the lifeline to the outside world in the late seventies and eighties when they went North Korea on everyone.
We don't donate to very many charities, but the Catholic orphanages and hospitals in Vietnam are literally the difference between life and death. The people know it and the churches have seven or eight masses a day, which are SRO with a large crowd outside listening at the windows.
A disclaimer - I am not Catholic but my wife is.
IMHO, the Catholic Church should be judges in its entirety, the good and the bad.

There is not enough good from the Catholic Church in is entire existence to offset the bad that it has done. Now that we are in the second decade of a new modern century they continue to condemn gays, gay marriage. abortion and contraception as modern errors that gravely offend human dignity. Who's dignity? The Catholic Church has no dignity. They lost whatever dignity they had by hiding all the pedophiles Priest during the 80's, 90's and 2000's.
They better wake up. A large percentage of their parishioners use contraception, many are gay and many have had abortions. So will they all be excommunicated from the church because of this or if they are willing to pay, the church is willing to look the other way!!!!
So what's next line of bullshit from this abomination of a religion. With just one old man calling the shots they are no better than the Nazi's.

I have to admit, though admittedly only anecdotal, pretty much all my Catholic friends have serious scars from growing up in that bizarre church. When it comes to sex, it seems Catholics are snake bit seriously bad.
I could forgive them of that, but the reality is the Catholic Church is responsible for THOUSANDS of deaths from HIV in Africa preaching this stupidity about condoms and how they don't protect from HIV, how if one uses one you are breaking God's rules . . . what fucking BS!!
It took them a few hundred years to apologize to Galileo's family for putting him under house arrest for suggesting the Earth was not the center of the universe, so I wouldn't exactly expect them to get with reality anytime soon.
How can it be that SO many people follow this BS??

Hate Muslims? You're a bigot. Hate illegal aliens? You're a xenophobe. Hate gays? You're a homophobe. Hate black people? You're a racist. Hate feminists? You're a sexist. Hate liberals? You're a reactionary neanderthal.
But hate Catholics? You are an enlightened, progressive, forward-thinking member of modern society! Yay, us!!!
Color me disgusted.

This is the one subject that has been pretty well hands off by this board since day one. I think it was about time that we got into religion.
Just as a disclaimer. I don't only dislike the Catholic Religion, I just dislike them more than the others.
My personal stand is if you want religion in your life great. Go for it. Just don't force it on me or have your church try to force it on me.

Joe, I completely agree. But in what way are they forcing anything on you? I was raised Catholic, and still respect the institution, but I pretty much ignore it most of the time. They never give me any shit about being lapsed. What are they doing to you?

Jake they are doing nothing to me. After being in Catholic School grades 1 to 12 and having it stuffed down my throat in grades 1 to 8, I just want nothing to do was them or any other religion as far as that is concerned.
I have just grown to have no respect for an institution that is stuck 2000 years in the past and has never taken any responsibility for any of it's actions.
I will say one thing in defense of my High School. They did not stuff the church down your throat.

I have 4 brothers and sisters. I am the only one of the 5 that received only 12 years of a Catholic education. The other 4 all got 16.
I have priests and nuns in our family. Although I am not currently a practicing Catholic I have to say in my personal experience the church was a positive influence in growing up.
I think I have a pretty solid moral compass due to the way I was raised. And the Catholic church was a part of that process.

I went to St. Andrews Episcopal School in Austin for grade school. They were hard as nails. My dad's cousin taught 2nd grade and my mom's cousin the 5th. Chapel every morning. Put up with zero bullshit.
It was a good influence on me. My grade school classmates are still some of my closest friends. I don't know any if them that didn't turn out pretty well.

What's wrong with Catholics? Well let's see . . .
It took them - what, 300 years to apologize to Galileo?
They are over run with pedophiles?
When you select folks who claim they are CELIBATE, you are selecting out a fucked up group of people?
They preach the Gospel that condoms don't really protect one from HIV??
That Gospel has killed millions in Africa??
The most disturbing issue regarding Catholics is if I was an atheist, I's simply point to the Catholic Church to show what is wrong with religion these days.
Pedophilia rampant within the church - anything related to SEX is a sin . . . and don't get me started on women as second rate citizens.
Catholic = FUCKED UP.
Simple.
