Well, with Howard Stern finally leaving terrestrial radio now a reality, I made the leap today and started a subscription to Sirius, buying a JVC tuner and hooking it up to my home theater system. The set-up was a snap, the reception is great and it's fairly straightforward to operate. The only problem I'm having so far is that I can't seem to get the wireless FM Transmitter to work properly -- sounds like a call to JVC's tech support is in order. Does anyone else have satellite radio, either XM or Sirius? How do you like it? Is it worth the added expense? After listening to Stern for almost a quarter of a century on traditional radio for free, it's frustrating to have to pay for it now after all this time ...

BB, I've heard XM radio in a car. The sound quality is excellent, but I understand some channels have commercials which is a drag. I listen to WFUV 90.7 which is Fordham University's station. They play a wide variety of music which is below the radar of conventional radio. I enjoy the various styles and go to Town Hall or the Beacon Theater to see these performers when they are in town. www.wfuv.org/

My new car came with an XM-ready radio. I looked into the cost to activate it, and decided it just wasn't worth it. Most content that you can get on satellite, you can get on internet radio for free. Not Howard Stern, of course, but he's an acquired taste that I've managed NOT to acquire......Jake

My Dish Network TV Satellite dish comes with the Sirius feed. I listen to it ALOT. I especially enjoy having the specialized 'stations'. I can tune my listening to the mood I am in.
Between that and web audio feeds of 'big market' radio stations, I have shit canned over the air radio in the office and house. I am NOT happy however that I cannot get a truely portable personal headset for Sirius, so I can listen to it while I am outside mowing the lawn, clearing the snow, etc. For that I am still stuck with 'over the air'. Automobile unit... soon come (soon as the mortgage is paid off in March).

....I am NOT happy however that I cannot get a truely portable personal headset for Sirius, so I can listen to it while I am outside mowing the lawn, clearing the snow, etc..... Gordon, my brother tells me he just bought a device that lets him stream music from his computer to his stereo, wirelessly. It basically is a Wi-Fi device that plugs into an auxiliary input on the back of the amp. This way he can play his mp3s or internet radio feeds anywhere. I don't know exactly how portable it is, but it might hook up to a stereo in your tractor!......Jake

The tractor doesnt have a stereo (its not THAT big), I am aware of the downloads (and I could do that now with my mp3 player), but I am holding out for live feed capability.

Yes, I'm talking about live feeds. But you'd still need a stereo in the tractor, or somehow connect it to a walkman......Jake

Beeb~
We're planning on getting home theater and a flat screen TV for Xmas for ourselves.
Any recommendations for a system for under $5,000?
Thanks, Cher

Any recommendations for a system for under $5,000? If you are going the HTIB route (Home-Theater-In-A-Box), then you will probably wind up with all of your components (excluding the TV) all together. The HTIB choices are many, but it used to be that the components were pretty crappy -- don't know if that's changed, but for that reason, I wouldn't recommend it. However, if you are buying each component separately, I am brand-loyal to Denon for both AV Receivers and DVD players. For speakers, I like both what I've heard and seen from Aperion -- in addition to the rich sound, their cabinets make the speakers look like nice pieces of furniture rather than merely gadgets. You didn't mention what technology of flat screen you're going with, so I'm assuming it's either plasma or LCD. If you're going plasma, make sure it's true HDTV, *not* SDTV (some folks buy "cheap" plasmas that are really only SD). However, if you are going LCD, take a look at Olevia -- saw them a couple of months ago at an electronics expo here in NYC and was very impressed. My TV is one of the smaller DLP's put out by Samsung -- being an RPTV, it is a tabletop model, meaning you can't hang it on the wall as you can with a plasma or LCD. Whatever TV you get, make sure it has both an analog (component) input for your HDTV programming and digital (HDMI) input for DVD's. The digital input is nice for the DVD's because (assuming you are connected to a DVD player that outputs HDMI), you can upscale the video quality from 480p to either 720p or 1080i.

Thanks for the info, Beeb.
I'm guessing that you don't like the Bose system that comes in a box.....
I see that Olevia makes a 42" ;D

Actually, I have a pair of front-firing Bose 161's in my 7.1 system and they work quite nicely (these are basically bookshelf speakers -- the room is too small -- and the walls too thin -- in my apartment to install floor-standing speakers with woofers). Are you talking about the Bose Cinemate? Customers on Crutchfield's Web site didn't seem to like that one and besides, I'm skeptical of any 2 or 3 speaker system that claims "virtual surround sound".

We were thinking about one of the Lifestyles Series where we can add on other rooms and outdoors.
Well, I just read what crutchfield had to say about the Bose system........
I'll do more research on your recommendations.
thanks again!

I haven't researched the Lifestyle Series as much as it sounds like you have, but based on a quick look on Crutchfield, I would pass on them because: - Cost - if you are in a $5K budget, that system eats up way too much of your money considering the features
- Those cube speakers may be attractive because they're space saving, but you have to use one of them as a center speaker and center speakers are usually designed differently to accommodate the type of sound they are intended to play
- No digital video connection for the DVD (something you'd want if you're getting an HDTV)
If you want outdoor or wireless, many good AV Receivers do that at much less cost -- look for what is called "multi-zone". My Denon has that feature, but I have no need to use it.

Thanks Gary.
I'm not going to do anymore checking.
I find that if I research and then purchase, I'm not going to look any further. The last thing I want to do is get pissed at myself for not finding the absolute best bang for my buck.
Cher Who's extremely happy with what she bought for the price

I have to disagree, Mancow at least talks about stuff other than blowjobs, tits or ass. Everytime I have heard Stern that is the entire subject matter of his show.

Everytime I have heard Stern that is the entire subject matter of his show. Which means that you haven't heard him very much. He doesn't just stick to talking about sex. As I said, I've been listening to him every day for over 20 yrs, so I think I'm pretty familiar with the content of the show.
