OK, it's early for this, blame the Merlot...what is your favorite Christmas song?
I want to catch you guys before you head out for the airport.
"I'll be home for Christmas" by Dean Martin is our vote.

Great topic! I love Christmas music, and have many eclectic albums. I could never pick an all-time favorite, but one of my many faves is "Blue Christmas." Both the Elvis version, and a Porky Pig version that I have......Jake

Porky Pig sang Blue Christmas?!?!?!? I had no idea! Of the more traditional Christmas songs I like "Winter Wonderland". Of the more contemporary stuff I like "Please Come Home for Christmas" by Jon Bonjovi and "All I Want for Christmas is You" by Mariah Carey (even though I think she's a bimbo). ;D

I don't know if these were ever hits in the USA but "Merry Xmas Everybody" by Slade, "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day" by Wizzard, and "Fairytale of New York" by The Pogues and the late Kirsty MacColl are my all-time favourite Chrismas songs.

Let's see.......of the religious songs I like "O Holy Night". Of the secular songs, "Blue Christmas" by Elvis or "The Restroom Door Said Gentlemen" from the Twisted Christmas album. That one also includes such hits as "The Twelve Things At Christmas that Such a Pain to Me."

That one also includes such hits as "The Twelve Things At Christmas that Such a Pain to Me." That song is funny. Our local radio station starts playing it right after Thanksgiving. It's right up there in air time with Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer (also very cute).

Cher said
I will second that
From the 'carols' I used find the Carol of the Bells extremely interesting to listen to, but then commercials started to use it, and its now in the 'corrupted' pile.
I have found the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's Christmas Operas extremely compelling and no songs more so than Christmas Eve-Sarajevo and Old City Bar (lyrics to that follow)...
OLD CITY BAR
In an old city bar That is never too far From the places that gather The dreams that have been
In the safety of night With its old neon light It beckons to strangers And they always come in
And the snow it was falling The neon was calling The music was low And the night Christmas Eve
And here was the danger That even with strangers Inside of this night It's easier to believe
Then the door opened wide And a child came inside That no one in the bar Had seen there before
And he asked did we know That outside in the snow That someone was lost Standing outside our door
Then the bartender gazed Through the smoke and the haze
Through the window and ice To a corner streetlight
Where standing alone By a broken pay phone Was a girl the child said Could no longer get home
And the snow it was falling The neon was calling The bartender turned And said , not that I care But how would you know this? The child said I've noticed If one could be home They'd be all ready there
Then the bartender came out from behind the bar And in all of his life he was never that far And he did something else that he thought no one saw When he took all the cash from the register draw
Then he followed the child to the girl cross the street And we watched from the bar as they started to speak Then he called for a cab and he said J.F.K. Put the girl in the cab and the cab drove away And we saw in his hand That the cash was all gone From the light that she had wished upon
If you want to arrange it This world you can ch-ch-change it If we could somehow make this Christmas thing last
By helping a neighbor Or even a stranger
And to know who needs help You need only just ask
Then he looked for the child But the child wasn't there Just the wind and the snow Waltzing dreams through the air
So he walked back inside Somehow different I think For the rest of the night No one paid for a drink
And the cynics will say That some neighborhood kid Wandered in on some bums In the world where they hid
But they weren't there So they couldn't see By an old neon star On that, night, Christmas Eve
When the snow it was falling The neon was calling And in case you should wonder In case you should care
Why we're on our own Never went home On that night of all nights We were already there
Then all at once inside that night He saw it all so clear The answer that he sought so long Had always been so near
It's every gift that someone gives Expecting nothing back It's every kindness that we do Each simple little act

I'm with Cher & Georgette's....Lennon's :Happy Christmas" and "Oh Holy Night" -- Both bring chills.
I adore carols and sing them all year long. In fact, the ONLY two things I like about Christmas is the carols and the lights. Everything else is a PIA. Needless to say, I don't decorate for Christmas. Am I party pooper or what?

Good thing I re-read that last sentence -- originally, I thought it said, "panty pooper". Be still my heart. ~sigh~

When I was a kid, my Dad played an album while we opened presents. It was Christmas tunes in pipe organ and chimes....no singing.
I'm not all that into Christmas either, but I couldn't help it when I was in Germany. Going to the Nurenburg Kris Kringle Mart, where the city plaza was a huge market place, drinking gluhwine, buying stuff. Yeah it was fun.
I think that was the year I made anatomically correct gingerbread men and women.....

Additional thoughts... O Come O Come Emmanuel, I particualrly like because it is in a minor key, which lends an aire of antiquity to it, though since it dates from the 15th century, doesnt need much help with that (also, its NEVER played on the radio, except for special Christmas shows)
The one 'sure thing' that will get me into the mood... The Nutcracker Suite. NEVER ask me to attend another version of the play (unless I get to play Mother Gigogne), I have had to deal with WAY to many evenings of local productions, paying respect to friends kids, BUT if I put the CD on I am into the Christmas mood by the second track.

Depends how you look at it -- if you make all of the female ones first, then all you have to do is add the package. Point is, you're not making more cookies.

Nah, Jake calls NPR "National Pinhead Radio"--doubt we could convert him. But Click & Clack the Tap It Brothers, on the other hand, ARE mighty compelling. (I don't even like the "Annoying Music Show" and Ken Nordeen's word jazz makes me puke. Bring on the Ira Glass and Garrison Keilor though!)
