He may be bald, he may be gray - he may not do flips off the piano anymore, but he is still fucking awesome !

Agreed! I've seen him many, many times. My favorite concerts were his New Year's Eve concert at MSG (forget the year, was a LONG time ago) and the Face to Face concert series with Elton John. I saw that series here at MSG, in Hartford, and at the MCI Center in DC. Rockin' good times!

Hazel, that was 1982 turning into 1983 -- I was there as well, 8 months pregnant (by default, designated driver). It was, indeed, a great show. Classic Joel. Lately, though, I have a hard time retaining any respect for the man. He married a ?24? year old woman. He's what, 56? His daughter is 20. I guess he's lucky he can sing.

I saw him in Birmingham Alabama on his 'Stranger' Tour....completely awesome...did like four encores......
Yeah, I have always thought about that..."Don't go ch-ch-changing to try and please me"...then divorces his wife for Cheryl Tiegs...guess it was too late by the time he wrote that song

Yeah, that's what I thought you meant. If he'd have been with Cheryl Tiegs he'd have surprised everyone as she's older than him (I think) and he usually likes chicks that are younger than him.

Younger, older, doesn't matter. He's still an innocent man in my eyes! He can play my piano any time. You know we catholic girls start much too late! (DJ coming out of her shell)
I could listen to Billy Joel all day long! And I've only had the opportunity to see him once in Milwaukee at the Bradley Center! (Not because he hasn't come here but because I have a difficult time spending $85+ a ticket to see anyone)

I'm with you on the prices DJ... there are quite a few concerts that I would enjoy but they are so damm expensive I went to a good concert last night, the price FREE it was the U.S. Air Force Band of Liberty playing JAZZ. They did stuff from Count Bassie, Duke Ellington and John Coultrane. They had a guest trombonist join them on stage for the 2nd half of the show "Jiggs Whigham". He was excellent.

Well, he's still got it! It was a fun time at MSG last night. As Laurie said, even though he's gray and mostly bald, he still has lots of energy. No, he didn't do flips on the piano but he did slide across the top of few times and he danced around the stage with his mic like a crazy man. The show started only 20 minutes late (a shocker to me, as I'm used to shows starting 45 minutes late) and there was no opening act. Billy announced that the show was being recorded (I'm not sure if it was going to be a DVD or for cable). The show was 2-1/2 hours long. I was a bit bored for the first half hour or so as he did lots of obscure cuts from his '71-'75 albums (I wasn't even a teenager at that time and had not yet discovered how cool he was). Finally he did some of his greatest hits stuff, including my personal favorite, 'A Matter of Trust". (Whenever I'm in my car and it comes on the radio I roll UP the windows and crank up the volume so I can feel the beat slamming into my chest.) Besides the obscure shit I didn't recognize he did the following faves: The Entertainer New York State of Mind (always a fave in this town!) Scenes from an Italian Restaurant Movin' Out Only the Good Die Young She's Always a Woman My Life Big Shot Goodnight Saigon You May be Right Don't Ask Me Why Allentown Keeping the Faith An Innocent Man We Didn't Start the Fire River of Dreams And of course, as he does at every show, he closed with Piano Man. While sitting in my seat waiting for the show to start I noticed about a dozen Marines walking about the arena. I would soon learn that they were part of the show. During "Goodnight Saigon" they were all lined up behind on a small catwalk above and behind the band. Not one person in the entire arena remained seated while they were on stage. At the end of the song they got a 5-minute standing ovation with deafening applause and thunderous chants of "U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A". It was extremely moving. Funny observation. It had been a couple of years since I'd been to a concert. I used to go to at least half a dozen concerts or more per year (my ex-hubby works for concert promoter, Ron Delsener. I used to get LOTS of free concert tix from him!) I remember back in the day when everyone used to light up their Bic's during a meaningful ballad or during the dark period right before the artist returns to the stage for an encore. Last night there was nary a Bic in the house. It seems the lighting instrument of choice these days is ... the CELL PHONE! I laughed so hard but I couldn't bring myself to flip my Princess Pink RazR open and wave it around. I would have felt too dorky.

Hazel
I should have thought to tell you that he started at 8:20. Sorry about that. I did know every obscure song he did (and I am about your age !!!!) Matter of trust is also one of my favorites - you are now going to make me find it, before I hit the road today. He didn't do the Saigon routine either time I saw him last month. I have seen him do it before. The one that I was really excited about was The Entertainer! So good !
The cell phone thing threw me too, and I couldn't bring myself to do it either. It made me feel so old - give me a lighter !

Billy needed a break and he got one of the roadies to come up to the stage to sing a "religious" song. We were all like ... WFT??? The roadie's name was CHAINSAW. He was a big, chunky guy dressed in a huge baggy tee and baggy shorts that hung down his butt. He had on dark colored sock with his sneakers. Looked like a complete dweeb. Then he surprised us all The religous song he sang was Highway to Hell. The dude was AWESOME!!! He had the joint rockin'. Did he do the same thing when you saw the show, Laurie?
