The news around here is all about the big blizzard hitting the Mid Atlantic region over the weekend. Any good stories to report? Or better yet, any good photos?........Jake

I was waiting for that Tex... this is a warm weather system, coming up from the south, as opposed to a cold air based "Alberta clipper". The latter systems can only produce light weight snow, usually less than 6-8 inches. The southern based storms are full of moisture from the gulf and/or off the gulf stream. Warm air has the potential to hold a lot more moisture than cold air, hurricanes are the extreme example of that.
We get 200 inches of snow each year because the cold air out of Canada comes across the relatively warm water of Lake Superior. The air warms by 20 degrees or so and picks up a lot of moisture, dumping a lot of snow.
BTW- we had one of the warmest January's in years (8 degrees above normal), and the most snow free ever (only 20 inches), because the air was coming in from the dry southwest for most of the month rather than cold air from across the lake.
Also, northern Canada is also having a very warm winter, Yellowknife, Yukon is forecast to have highs in the 20's this week, normal is about -5 to-10.

No snow here but it's cold. My de-icer broke and my goldfish pond/tub froze solid. I called Tetra only to inquire about the warranty and they quickly shipped a new one, no questions asked.
If I can find a spare USB cable I'll post some pictures of the goings on.

Check this driver out, he's watching a movie while driving on the parkway. I thought you guys would get a laugh so I put down my beer and grabbed my cell phone to snap a picture. He was all over the road so it could have been a porno. I hope the flash didn't ruin the "moment".

I took this the the other morning on my way to West Point. This is the Bear Mountain Bridge which connects Orange and Westchester Counties. It's been very cold this winter and ferry service to NYC was sporadic as the Coast Guard broke up the ice. This is looking south, the mountain peaks are about 1000 feet above the river surface.

Barely visible in lower portion of photo is a northbound CSX freight train. In the still air, the horn blasts from the train bounce from mountain to mountain creating a musical echo. This is an active rail route from the mid 1800's but stopped passenger service in 1965. (just as it was needed most!)

In Brooklyn/Manhattan, the snow was a barely noticeable dusting -- however, I'm given to understand from the news reports that in NJ (especially the southern region) they got buried in a foot of the cold white stuff or more. To the north (da Bronx and further up where Gary lives), it was something of a non - event.

We ended up with 17 inches here at the house. We had a TON of sleet mix in last night during the first phase of the storm (the warm air advection). Once the primary transferred it's energy to the coast and bombed near Hattaras, the northerly flow on the backside turned everything back to snow.
Then the Upper Level Low came through from the Ohio Valley and really got some nice banding going for us. We picked up 8 inches since sunrise today. With the winds as the secondary deepened and headed up the coast, gale and blizzard warnings verified. No more than minor coastal flooding for our county.
Gordon mentioned the 'warm weather' origins of these systems. This one in particular was extremely wet. 4-5 Standard Deviations above average moisture content for this time of year. We ended up with close to 3 inches of liquid equivelant. After this storm came ashore in CA and prior to tapping the Gulf, the moisture source could clearly be seen on satellite tapping the ITCZ (Intertropical Convergence Zone) back in the Pacific near the international date line.
The models that the NWS uses for predicting these storms have been incredibly accurate this year. I believe this is the first year that they've deployed hurricane hunter type aircraft from Japan and Alaska in order to get upper air data for the models while these systems are still over the Pacific. This storm was pegged back on 1/30, while we were in the middle of our last 12+ storm here.
We are well over 30 inches locally this season, with an average of close to 10. The pattern we are locked into right now pretty much forces systems to keep taking the same track as they have the past couple of weeks. The next two to look for are next Tues/Wed and then again next weekend.
I have pictures on my facebook page.
Gary (sorry for the length of the post, I'm sure Jake won't read the whole thing, lol)

I was actually coming in to write this up when I saw that you had already started a topic. God help us if we end up with more than one thread on the same topic around here, the inmates go ape shit! :-) I would have put it in the Pocket Protector area since "she who will remain nameless" called me a weather geek yesterday! That made my day...
We also found the perfect thing to do on a snowed in day. We signed up for the 2 week trial Net Flix. So we've been watching movies all day.

Gary, sorry for the confusion. I meant photos of the snowstorm. [/i][/quote] No confusion Jake, just thought I'd post some current outdoor pictures and yes, BB is correct, the northern downstate region of NY only experienced a typical cold winter day. Hope you didn't mind the photo's.

I could have Mrs. Nola post pictures of her cutting the grass and cleaning the pool today. I am thinking that technically Orlando is considered in the East too.
I am so excited that she will have all my chores done by the time I get back in town tomorrow afternoon.
