I got an email through my high school class blanket email from one of my classmates saying she was in the UK for a program (she is a teacher) and had lost her wallet and desperately needed a $700 loan to pay her hotel and get her to the airport. The time was about 3AM (reasonable for the time zone), her name was spelled correctly (she has an unusual spelling of a common name), and the wording and tenor of the email was plausible. It said that there was no phone at which she could be reached. Our class is very close knit and there is no way we could leave her stranded if it was legitimate.
The biggest red flag for me was that her little sister lives in town and could easily send her the money. I called her sister this morning and told her. Her sister was shocked said that her older sister was teaching school in Kilgore this morning and please tell everyone in the class that this was bullshit, which I did. Another guy in the class said that he got the same email from a family member. BTW, both had email accounts with Yahoo.
If you get a plea from a friend or relative claiming to be stranded overseas, check it out thoroughly before you send any money.

That one goes around periodically, and is tempting because its so personalized. It was originally a Facebook scam, I hadnt heard it morphing into a Yahoo thing, unless that is a coincidence

Strangely enough I am actually stranded just outside London and would like to get to the USA. If anyone could send me my airfare, taxi money and perhaps a little extra on top to buy a meal and a few drinks at the airport and on the plane I'd be very grateful. Simon

I think we can make this a team effort. If someone can get Simon into NYC, I'll be more than happy to pay for his meals and drinks.

Simon, I can clean the old food out of the refrigerator and mail it to Beeb for snacks upon your arrival. Enjoy.

If you are looking for work while you are over here I know of a couple of opportunities. I think one fella is looking for someone to answer the phone and post invoices. And I don't think the housekeeping position has been filled yet either.
There are some excellent fringe benefits attached to both jobs.

Option two does involve working but I get to help myself to the home owner's expensive wine whenever I like. Hmmm, tough choices. Simon

Simon, there is no great calling in life than assisting an owner clear out the old stock in their wine cellar.

I'm locked inside my car with no money to pay a locksmith. Will each of you please PayPal $100 to my email account? And hurry; the top is down, and it looks like rain.

Well if you are leaning towards taking the wine drinking job please consider a quick side trip to Orlando during your visit.
If you can impersonate Nick Faldo I will be happy to take you to breakfast at the Perkins by my house. I am confident I can get you laid.

I can offer 80 degree weather and a pool, also -- unfortunately, it's at my gym.
If nola really can get Simon laid, however, that may be the overriding factor.

I can trump all of you... I can offer Simon all the snow he would want to shovel, nothing in the way of nothing in the way of socializing activities except a local elementary school production of the Nutcracker and a night of curling. Thats if the plane actually lands. Welcome Simon.

Howzabout this:
Simon, ever see the movie "Some Like It Hot?" Well, if you wouldn't mind dressing up like a girl for an entire week, I *might* just be able to convince me pal Vbplyr to allow you to be one of her roommates at Hedo for NYE.
However, as far as the getting laid part, you're on your own there, buddy.

I have to ask... does any of this involve us on this side of the Atlantic potentially being exposed to extradition treaties, Interpol investigations, or syndicated crime reprisals? This is Christmas afterall, and I wouldnt want my grog being drunk by ingrate family members while a "guest" in a Federal facility not of my choice.
