Florence! Home of Galileo and DaVinci, the Medici's, one of the best places in Europe ...and we must mention the Amalfi Coast for breathtaking beauty with every vista! (Pompeii isn't far either and worth two days' distraction).

Just curious though...why are you only doing Rome? I must admit if I had only 1 week in Italy I'd do another location. A reasonable question. For one thing, we are both city people, and want to see what passes for a real city in Europe. Countrysides do nothing for me, nor do little towns. For another, Rome easily has a week worth of entertainment and ambiance. Sometimes I'd rather do one thing well than a bunch of things meagerly. For another, I've been to Florence. Didn't care for it. It felt like a movie set. Venice sounds fun, I'd like to visit there sometime, although I've heard decidedly mixed reviews. But the main reason is that I had enough miles for one pair of round trip tickets, and one week at a Marriott. It would have been tough to stretch them to other towns. And with the dollar/Euro ratio these days, even this "free" trip cost us plenty! I'm not sure I'd recommend everyone do it the way we did, but we liked it.......Jake P.S. - we're back home now.
