I'm frequently (and not incorrectly) called a cheapskate, or even a cheap bastard. I cannot deny the charges, but I do like to have an arsenal of alternative terms on hand. For example, I can say "I prefer to think of myself as thrifty," or some such crap.
I can think of about half a dozen good synonyms off the top of my head (one of my favorites is "parsimonious"), but I'm sure there are more out there. What are your favorites? They can be single words, phrases, or even folksy colloquialisms (I'm sure Tex has a few of those). Let's hear your suggestions!.........Jake

BTW- the "skate" may have nothing to do with recreational footwear... cheapskate -"miserly person," 1896, from cheap (q.v.), second element perhaps from Amer.Eng. slang skate "worn-out horse" (1894), of uncertain origin.

Skate can also mean a person :
skate n.
1. A fellow; a person. 2. A decrepit horse; a nag.
[Perhaps alteration of dialectal skite, contemptible person; see blatherskite.]
blath·er·skite (blr-skt) n. 1. A babbling, foolish person. 2. Blather.
Simon (who thinks we shouldn't rule out the fish skate also)

This is also a wonderful opportunity to add to the vocabulary by creating our own new terms.
For instance going forward such a person could be known as a Jakewad.

Given his personal finance profile, we need to check whether Jake is Scottish.

My grandfather often said he tired of people trying to nickle and dime him all the time. As a kid I always thought it was kind of cool that people were trying to give him free ch-ch-change and yet I could not understand why he objected to this.

His apartment was spick despite his niggardly lifestyle.
