I had some Buffalo Trace for the first time just a couple months ago and was very impressed. I have put it on my list to add to my collection.
At that tasting, an MD friend/antagonist with a long history of knowing more about about everything than everyone else, could not understand why a Kentucky bourbon would be called "Buffalo Trace" as "everyone knows" there were never any buffalo east of the Mississippi River. Obviously, as an MD, his knowledge of animal habitat was far superior to mine, but I did produce the text book from my Wildlife Habitat class eons ago, that showed the original range of the American Bison to be from Florida to New York and the east coast to the Rockies. Of course, that wasnt good for him, he KNEW he was right, and there was no way that buffalo ever lived in Kentucky, so to name a bourbon "Buffalo Trace" was stupid... he didnt deserve the second taste.

Great story! BTW, if you ever get a chance to taste some of that White Dog Mash #1, let me know what you think ...

there were never any buffalo east of the Mississippi River. I think there was buffalo in the east, 400 -300 years ago. After all, what did the indigenous people eat? Not just Hot wings! Yes, even in Buffalo New York.
